NV 3500: V6 & V8 the same?

I posted this on the 88-98 board, got no answers, so I'll try it here.

I need a transmission for my truck, it's a 89 K1500, 5.7 M5.

The idler shaft bearings are getting well worn, to the point of howling in all gears but 4th.
I have found another transmission, but it's behind a V6. And it's too far away to go look at just to see if it'll fit. So my question is, will it bolt up to the 5.7 bellhousing (I think it will, but not positive)?
Is it the same transmission, will it stand up behind the (stock) V8?
It's in a 1990 K 1500, so I'm thinking that if it is the same transmission and will hold up, it should be just a straight bolt in, yes or no?

I need to make a decision and get something done soon, if anybody knows I could sure use some help here.

Thanks!!

Re: NV 3500: V6 & V8 the same?

The NV3500 used in 91 and up 4.3 s10's should be the same as a 4.3 in the bigger truck.New Venture rates this transmission for 300 ft lbs of torque, the company is now part of Magna Powertrain I believe. Supposedly there's two versions for GM,one with a 3.50 first gear ratio and a 4.03 version.Probably all have electric speedo drives. The 4.3 tranny should be fine unless you have a lots of power and or drive like you stole it.I'm thinking the NV 3500 was used behind 305 V-8's too?
Your 89 should have the Getrag 5 speed as original. They had a reputution for devolping issues.I think the NV types replaced them around 91

Thanks! I'll check my 1st gear ratio and get him to check that one.
My transmission looks like this:

That's the NV3500 right?, or is there any external difference?

I see the rebuild kit seems to fit both, and a few others.

Re: NV 3500: V6 & V8 the same?

You can bolt in any 5 speed transmission from a fullsize 88 - 95 K1500 into your truck, the V6 and V8 versions are both the same all around. You can also bolt in a 96 - 06 5 speed into your truck if you are willing to switch over to the internal clutch slave / throwout bearing combo.

While the S10 units are internally the same, they have their shifter tower sitting right at the end of the tail shaft, and they have only 5 bolts for the transfercase instead of 6.

Thanks for the information. I was pretty sure that was the case, nice to know about the 96-06 transmissions too. He's a trucker, and he's coming this way tomorrow, he said he'd try to get it out in the morning and bring it with him, all I gotta do is meet him on the road. So this info was right on time, thanks everybody
