Re: Grill ideas,

1963 grilles aren't easy to find in the US either. It's my favorite Chevy grille for the 60-66 series. The easy solution would be install one of the new replacement 1966 grilles, but I like the idea of a custom grille. The grille cavity is smooth all around and would easily lend to a 50's style customizing. The first issue would be coming up with some type of attractive cylindrical headlight buckets. Then you could span the open distance between them with flat stock or round tubes like the old custom accessory tube grilles.

A few years ago a guy put a 56 Plymouth grille between round headlight buckets in a 53 Ford pickup. I thought it would look great in my 1960 GMC, but I never had any luck finding a 56 Plymouth grille. I also have an old "Sketchpad" article from a 1960's Car Craft magazine and they drew up an early 60's Chevy truck with 59 Olds quad headlights and a 59 Chevy passenger car grille. The concept does open up a lot of possibilities.

Question Re: Grill ideas,

I was thinking along the lines of two headlight pods from a 50s ford pop or 34 ford, cut the back off so the light would not stick out to far, that would give you your haedlight housing then use 25mm stainless steel bars either running left to right or up and down,

What do you guys think,

Re: Grill ideas,

I like the idea. It would be different, and could look really great depending on how it turns out. And if it's not exactly right on the first pass, you can change it a bit and do it again. One guy with a creative vision can influence many others to put on their thinking caps too.

Re: Grill ideas,

Well, if i cannot get a 63 grill, what are my choices, a grill from another year, maybee, but the more i think about a custom grill the more i like the idea,

Its good to be different but different is not allways good,

Re: Grill ideas,

This is what I am planning for my '65. It is a '57 Chevy Grille Bar. The picture is a mock up, grille bar is on the way from Ebay.

I never have liked the stock grilles on these trucks because too me they look like an afterthought. They stick out too far and are stamped out of one piece of steel. That seemed to be the big 3's SOP in the mid 60's...

Now THAT's funny. When this thread started my first thought was "you could use a '57 chevy grill bar", and then, you post one. Of ALL the possibilities.....Bizzar!.

Re: Grill ideas,

There's so many possibilities with these trucks I'm amazed there haven't been more customized, back when or now. The cavity is just a blank canvas like a 49 Merc, and virtually anything can be installed.

Many years ago I pulled the GMC letters off mine and installed a bumper overrider bar from a 1950 Plymouth. It fit well and looked pretty cool. I really wanted to take it further but changed directions.

And why stop at the grille. I'm disappointed GM never updated the 2nd design hood. With the run from 60-66, they could have introduced another 1-2 styles. I was always hoping Chip Foose would do one of these trucks on Overhaulin and design a new hood. I can imagine alternate designs, but don't have the fabricating skills to build something like that.
