Power Parts Needed

How do I get a list of parts I need to switch to power brakes and power steering?
I have a 56 chev on a 79 van frame. 6 bolt,drum brakes and std steering.
I also need to switch out the B7M quick shifter for a normal one. Truck has a turbo 350 auto transmission.
Thank you

Re: Power Parts Needed

Is the van frame based on a truck frame or big car? Usually the conversion requires new spindles, caliper brackets if not on spindle, discs, calipers, master cylinder, booster, proportion valve and lines. I would think the 79 would have come with front disc brakes. You usually have to change the front lines to the brakes too. If you are lucky it is based on a truck and you can just find one close to the years and get everything from one rig.

Power steering usually requires a PS box. Sometimes they also have different linkage than the manual. You will also need the ps pump, brackets and hoses. Steering column may be different to, doesn't the van seat and steering sit farther forward on the frame? Seems like an odd donor.

Re: Power Parts Needed

There are kits out there that have every part you'd need to put power steering and/or discs on the stock axle, but given the cost wouldn't it be easier to get an IFS setup and ditch the I beam? Then you'd have power steering, disc brakes, sit lower, ride better, and be a whole lot lighter. There are several factory front clip options, mustangII kits, Corvette IFS, etc.

Re: Power Parts Needed

I was looking at keeping the six bolt system. I cant do the work myself so I was hoping to just get parts and pay for labour to set it all up.

Gotcha...try this address

http://www.classicperform.com/4754chevtrk.html

They have a 6 lug disc upgrade kit part number 4954CBK6 and more than one type of power steering add on kit. Kits are nice - less fabrication and parts hunting. They are a bit pricey though. Hope that helps.
