Air Compressor a good deal?
I have found an ad for a Husky brand Air Compressor, poster says it's virtually new with near 5 hours run time on it. Specs are 220, 4hp, 60 gallon tank, 125psi
asking $250? I have a modest amount of tools and am learning to do a lot of mechanic work on my own. Would this be a good starter compressor to suit my needs? Thanks! |

Re: Air Compressor a good deal?
There are 2 types of garage air compressors. Oil-less and oil. The oil-less have a Teflon sleeve on the pistons, similar to rings in an engine. These sleves, being Teflon, do not need oil, but do wear out. Many of the second hand oil-less compressors have worn sleeves. They are not hard to replace, but require replacement from time-to-time. Be cautious when buying these.
The type of compressors that take oil are where the real investment is. They have rings similar to an engine, and a full lube system. As long as you change the oil anually, and turn it over a few times by hand prior to start up, it will last longer than the owner. Which type is this? Re: Air Compressor a good deal?
like said avoid oilless compressors// a 4HP aint really that much, i'd do some research and see what that model goes for new // also most important in compressors is CFM's of compressor and CFM's of the tools you want to power up

Actually its a Campbell-Hausfield.
if its a 220 I'm not sure I ever saw a 220v oil free compressor with the exception of ones for dental air Last edited by mbgmike; 12-24-2009 at 04:13 PM. |

Re: Air Compressor a good deal?
More importantly do you have a 220v power supply? Some garages don't I wish I did at home I would have a big compressor like that. Another thing is will you be moving it around? I would hate to have to move one of those. I have a smaller Craftsman 33 gal/5hp oilless at home. It works great in the garage for everything I need, and it rolls around easily. For serious use at work I do enjoy the big 80 gal/ quincy pumps/ 3 phase compressor we have! I can never run that thing out of air!
