PCV Connection On SBC 350

I have an old school stock 1971' SBC 350.

My left valve cover has the PCV valve slid in a rubber grommet and connected via rubber hose to the large PCV connection at the front-n-center base of my Edelbrock 1406.

The right valve cover has a nipple with a hose not connected to anything, but I am assuming should be connected to my air cleaner.

1) If I connect the right valve cover to the air cleaner, is this the proper PCV routing?

2) Does connecting the PCV valve to the base of the carburetor negatively effect the intake vacuum?

Re: PCV Connection On SBC 350

You need 1 pcv it connects to the middle/bottom of the eddy carb.

Im pretty sure you almost gotta have pcv, otherwise you'll have all sorts of sludge in your topend..

Re: PCV Connection On SBC 350

you can replace the nipple with a breather and call it good. from what I understand, you want fresh air coming in, and old air being sucked out and burned.

So fresh air is sucked down through the right head, through the crank case, up the left head, pass the pcv check value and into the intake at the base of the carburetor.

Doesn't that effect the vacuum of the intake?

Re: PCV Connection On SBC 350

Nope, that is how it is stock. With mine though, the covers are switched. PVC valve on driver side, breather on passenger side. But before the swap, my motor had a elbow that was attached to the passenger side V/C and a hose that went to the air cleaner. Despite what one might think, the turbulent air in the air cleaner is not that much, so the motor was sucking in clean air through the air cleaner. Then burning it through the other side via PCV valve. One purpose of the PCV is to vent everything like blow by, ETC.

Re: PCV Connection On SBC 350

I finally got my PCV system up and running. I have a larger more modern, stock chevy air cleaner and have hook it up to right (passenger) side cover. Then hooked PCV valve to left (driver) side cover and connected it to the PCV hook up in front of Carb.

I think I am set.

Post pics of your hose connections... I have a 1405 and the PO plugged the middle connector and right connector.

Does the position of placing a PCV breather and breather on either sides matter?? I was thinking of putting the PCV breather cap on the passenger and the breather on the driver. And as stated, put a mini. air filter on the right connector/nipple. Will that work???

It doesn't matter which side you have it on. The important thing is to have clean air going into one valve cover and the pcv valve connected to the carburetor in the other valve cover.

Re: PCV Connection On SBC 350

I have a late model air cleaner on mine. Its snorkel goes to the passenger side and has a rubber flex duct that will all me to take fresh air from the side. For that unit the fresh air come from the passenger value cover via the air cleaner. It then travels through the engine, to the driver's value cover and to the center of the 1406.

The direction doesn't matter, it the path it travels. It basic design is to allow blow by gases to travel to the intake manifold for burning and use filtered air as replacement air. One of the only pollution control devices that is good for the engine.
