Inline 6, Power Steering Bracket?

I finally got around to installing my power steering setup and ran into a small snag.

The alternator doesn't line up with the tensioner slot in the bracket.


I'm wondering if the power steering setup uses a different lower alternator mount to drop it down about 3/4"?

Any info from folks that have done this install would be a big help.

what motor do you have there and what motor did the bracket come off of?

Its a 1968 230. The setup came off a '72 Nova 250. Here is another shot of the upper bracket. I'm pretty sure these are the correct brackets for non-integrated head. But it looks like I should also have a different bracket for the alt. I am considering making one up with some 1/4" plate.

move it.....looks like a simple cut and move it slight and reweld it...Nothing fits Perfect

Yeah thats probably the best option. Would that lower alt mount be made of cast iron?

I was perhaps thinking that it may have come off of a 292 as they are a little different in height I believe than a 230-250 which would have compensated for the difference shown

Yeah that makes sense. I'm no expert on these brackets, the guy said he just pulled them off his 250. Think i'm gonna modify the alt mount and make it work. hopefully that will be the only snag I run into....and the belts line up alright.

It seems to me the 292 lower bracket was cast & the 250 was strap steel.

That lower bracket looks like cast iron to me.

Yeah, it is. Think it'd be easier to just make something up rather than try to cut/weld it.

I'm starting to think this setup is for integrated head engines. But should still work.

you have the wrong lower bracket for the power steering pump set up you are using. I will try and send you a pic of my bracket

I am brutal for remembering to post updates, but somehow remembered for this one. Still not sure if these brackets are for a integrated or non-integrated head, but with some tweaking they seem to be working fine.

I made up a lower alt bracket with some angle iron I had. Working good so far.


Then with a couple spacers here and a little bending there, these PS brackets seem to do the trick. The hardest part was getting the PS pump to lean back at the right angle to match the crank/water pump pulleys.


I also had to beat the pulley with a hammer to change its offset, it was off by a good half inch before I took the mallet to it. Made a little truing stand and gave it "love taps" til it stopped wobbling, haha.

Big thanks to Captain Fab for putting out such a good product! I printed off the template and installing the gearbox turned out to be the easiest part about this entire job.

Steers like a dream now. Butter.
