New user, 2 questions - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am a brand new user and have been very impressed with the forum's info and the kindness to people who have silly questions like me.

I just bought a 1972 Chevy stepside longbox a few weeks ago. I'd post pictures, but don't have a camera and don't know how, and it's not real impressive yet, so that may come another day. My question is:

1. How many stepside longboxes are there?

2. I've tried to remove the dash cluster, but how do I remove the headlight switch?

First off, welcome from W. Tennessee, glad to have you here.

Secondly, we are not ashamed of our trucks no matter how bad they look. HeII, just look at my avatar

Third, I don't know how many long steps were made, but I'm sure some one will be able to answer that shortly.

Last, the headlight knob has a very little set screw on the side of the part that pushes on to the shaft. A screw driver for eye glass repair works well.

I don't know the production numbers on the long steps but around here (Oregon) I don't see a lot of them.

As far as the headlight switch, you need to reach up under the dash and there is a little button on the switch, press that and pull on the knob. That should release the knob/shaft. Sometimes the button can be a b*tch to push in because they get old and crusty.

Not sure about the step sidelong beds.
The headlight switch you reach up under the dash & on top of the headlight sw. there is a button push it & pull the arm out.

dtlilly..yougot that backwards..it's the wiper knob with the screw. Pull the headlight knoball the way out, and then reach up to the swith behind the dash...on top of the switch you will feel a little spring loaded "button"...push down on the button, and pull the knob the rest of the way out. Removing the plug harness from the switch will turn the headlights off. Good Luck my young padwan, welcome to the board, and may the force be with you.

Update: It's a 3/4 Ton. 402 engine. Runs great, just looks bad.

Everytime I would take out my cluster I would just take the black knob off the switch by pulling it off. I was wondering if there was another way to take it off without wearing it out. Oh Well, now I know.

As for question #2, there were 3973 3/4 ton stepsides made in 72. I'd wager not many of them got the BB option as stepside longboxes were pretty utilitarian. Gotta have pics. What other options did it come with on your glovebox sticker?

Remember what Class of 69 said about the wiring harness. If you don't disconnect it, your lights stay on.
You could also just disconnect the battery.
If I remember right (doubtful) the "button" under there has flat sides - kinda like a wedgy sorta thing.
No - not that kind of wedgy.

You guys are going to confuse him on the switch removal.................

Reconfirm,

Disconnect Battery first.

Headlight switch, with the knob pushed in.....reach under the dash on top of the switch and push down on the button. Then slowly pull out the swith with the button depressed.

The wiper knob has a set screw to remove.

Word of warning..........leave the battery disconnected while you have this apart. It will save the possibility of the headlight switch being slightly on causing a drain on the battery.
