That old truck smell

In the 20 plus yrs of playing with 67-72s, they all have a familiar cab smell, I'm sure it's not just me. Over the years i have owned 2 panels, 1 burb, 6 blazers, 3 pick-ups, all had that undiscribeable smell of, i quess oil, grease, dirt, and more. Even going to bone yards and opening a cab, it has that smell. Don't get me wrong, Personally i love that smell, being practically born in my father's 68 swb step he bought new in late 67, o.k the truck was 6 yrs old. Tell me i'm not nuts. What do you think causes this smell?

Re: That old truck smell

Nope, not nuts!!!

My son made the comment a few weeks back when we were getting into my '97 K1500 work truck, "too bad this doesn't smell like the GMC". So even at 14, he likes that smell too! I told him to give it another 37 years, and maybe it will.

If we could figure out how to bottle it up, I'm sure that there are at least dozens of people that would buy it!!

I think it has to be a mixing of everything, rust, old oil, old grease, dust, disintegrating upholstery, everything that all old vehicles have in common. Just about all of them I have been in, have the same, or similar aroma.

You are not crazy, they all smell the same.

I removed the smell in mine, it now smells like a well tanned cow.

You didn't get it out. It's in the pores of the steel. You just added enough cow to overpower it.

Re: That old truck smell

The smell is one of the two things I love about these trucks, the other one being the hollow sound the doors make when you close them

my youngest daughter loves to go to rod runs with us because the 64 "smells like a truck" she wants a old car or truck herself.

Re: That old truck smell

My 67 just smells like old gas...the tank had been sitting 3/4 full for 10 years when I inherited it, a few miles down the road on the trailer, I found out there was a hole rusted in it at the top as it sloshed out everywhere. My 78 just smells like smoke, it was a fire truck for 30 years afterall...

Re: That old truck smell

A month or so back, I sold my 66 with that beautiful ol' smell.
I sold it to a longtime good friend.
I hadn't been in that truck for more than 6 months.
When I got in it to help him get it to his house, that smell instantly hit me, and I thought of grandpa's old 65.

Re: That old truck smell

I think the stink in my 59 is a combo of the old seat and gas tank. It puts a smile on my face when i open the door. The 55 d@dge on other hand, really does smell like a wet dog.

When I got my 65 back, it had soggy house hold carpet on the floor board.
I pulled that up and put an aftermarket floor mat in. After a couple years, my 65 still didn't have that old truck smell. I found a member in these forums who had an old original floor mat.
It's been in the truck a little over a year now. I'm now noticing that good old truck smell.
I'm not saying the mat is where the smell is coming from, I'm just thinking some of the other stuff in the truck before was nullifying (drowning out) the old truck smell.
