slide in receiver hitch help?

Ive done 0 research on this but im looking to put a hitch on my 66 gmc suburban. I have never delt with buying one before or anything and dont know all the ins and outs. All the trucks I have owned already had one when I got them. Are they kinda universal to frame widths and you simply drill holes and bolt it up? Thanks guys.

Re: slide in receiver hitch help?

They are not universal. Different years/models have different frame widths. Any auto parts store should be able to order one for you that is built for your truck. I ordered the hitch for my 67 C30 from Advance and it fit great.

Re: slide in receiver hitch help?

So I look at the top of the message board page and noticed that etrailer has an ad up there. And yeah they have them. of course not listed for a burb but for a puckup. Why would it matter if its a long or short bed? As I understand my burb qould be considered a shortbed right?

Re: slide in receiver hitch help?

Order from a local place. That way if it isn't right you can return it. Sometimes it will save significantly on shipping too.

Re: slide in receiver hitch help?

I tow a boat so I've installed a hitch on all of my vehicles that didn't come with one. I have a local muffler shop that also sells hitches. They are top quality and are able to install them in under 30 minutes. You might try one of those shops local to you.

Thats kinda what I was thinking. I see most muffler shops say they do hitches too.

Re: slide in receiver hitch help?

I ordered a universal motorhome hitch from hidden-hitch for my old '60. Here are the pics. A hidden hitch probably won't work on your suburban because it would have to go through the bumper, but you can get a universal drop-hitch I'm sure.

Re: slide in receiver hitch help?

So what option did you go with? Did you order a universal fit or custom built? I have a 66 Suburban that will need this some day.

Looks good! Glad it went fairly easy. You can always rely on someone here to have the answer. If not, you asked the wrong question. : )

Re: slide in receiver hitch help?

I have never had alot of luck with those wire splicer connections. Seems like about once a year or so I have to kinda wiggle or even open them up cuz something stops working. So this time I soldered all the connections for the trailer plug. I have no need for the larger 7 blade plug but I installed the plug with both for future use. When I get some time ill wire in the hot lead for the plug. Im thinking im going to end up with an amp for the stereo in the rear of the burb so ill probably end up running all the wiring back then. Brakes, amps,RCA's,remote rear door lock, ect....

Re: slide in receiver hitch help?

Doug,

Is the boat behind your Burb what you are going to pull? I love it when 60-66 Trucks, Suburbans and Panels are used to tow boats, camping trailers, toy haulers, etc. 20 years ago I was at an Arizona lake and saw a 1966 Chevy 4x4 Panel pulling a bad ass matching jet boat, they were both painted yellow and the Panel had a mural painted on its sides and the boat had the same mural painted on its bow. I sure wish I had some pictures of that combo as this is burned into my mind after all these years.

I will use it to tow the boat and dirtbikes. Light weight stuff. Nothing like a toy hauler or anything.
