K20 Challenge

First a little history of my 1969 Chevy K20 that I am starting to build -

I bought the truck off of Ebay in 2002 upgrading from a rusty 72 K20 that I drove daily. It came from Lake Tahoe California and was a fairly solid truck but wasn't all that I had desired and I think I over paid, yet the goal remained the same (to some day do a restoration). The body was nice but had some rust-through in the cab, it ran but was getting tired, but overall it was a good start for a project truck.

In 2009 I came up with a plan up to do the resto but it would take a few years to get started (paying down debts and cashing out investments). I was aiming to start in March of 2012 and that target has been reached.

Since it has sat for over two years without moving or doing any work on it, my Mom has had nothing but doubts that this truck would ever see a road on it's own power again. I am a 43 year old man and my Mom still doesn't believe in me, lol. She has offered me a challenge that she thinks is a slam dunk for her. If the truck doesn't roll down the road by September of 2013 I owe her a vacation on me, but WHEN I am done with it (by September of 2013) she owes me and my family a vacation.

So here I go down this road that I have never traveled but have always wanted to. I know that it can be done but it's all up to me to see to it that it happens. So wish me lots of luck ('cuz God knows I'm going to need it) and send along your advice, encouragement and criticism too.

Re: K20 Challenge

OK - Like I said, I started in March so I have some catching up to do with the progress of the truck. I am doing a complete frame-off, bolt by bolt restoration so I needed to get the truck completely taken apart, check! As of today, the body panels and frame are at the sand blaster. The frame and core support will be powder coated in satin black. I can't wait to pick them up this weekend. I have also been collecting pieces and buying a whole lot of stuff for the truck. Here are some progress pictures.

Got the cab in 2009 from a board member (Tom Korinek) in Arizona, A/C big window 67. It is in great shape, no patches, all origional steel.

Re: K20 Challenge

Not much action lately on the truck. Getting the house painted and some yard work done. I did however get a ton of parts delivered yesterday from Year One and LMC.

Re: K20 Challenge

OK it's been a while but I am once again working on the truck. I really need to pick up the pace if I want to be beating the pavement in September. Here's what I've been up to -

The differentials, along with some other various parts, are out for blasting and powdercoating. I have been cleaning and coating other parts at home. I also swapped hubs from a 72 K20 and bought new disk brake parts for the front and rear.

I am waiting on LMC to figure out a leaf spring issue. They sent me a pair of rear leafs, one was the 5-leaf that is what the K20 has, the other one they sent was a 4-leaf. I sent back the 4 and they sent a 4 once again. I'm not sure what the deal is but they are working on it. When I get the leaf issue sorted out they will be going to the powder coater too.

Re: K20 Challenge

I WOULD NOT powder coat the springs. You run the risk of loosing some of the temper during the baking. Plus, they need to slide and bend and the coating will just crack anyways.
