Coolant Overflow Tank - Factory in 72?

Were the 1972 Supers factory equipped with coolant overflow tanks or is that an option someone added later?

If these trucks were factory equipped with a coolant overflow, where can I get one? The tank on mine is severally damaged.

Thanks,
Clayton

GM did have an coolant overflow tank for these truck as an option, but trying to locate one would be like finding a needle in a haystack. We have one that we offer that looks like it belongs under the hood, but is not stock. You can find them in radiators andrelated in our website. Right now it says they are temporarily out of stock, but that is because I haven't gotten the chance to update our website. I will try to do that today.. WES

That looks very similar to what I have. What is the price when they are in stock?

Hi Wes,
If I'm seeing correctly, your setup looks like a correct washer fluid tank/bracket with a later model coolant tank top on it. Is that correct? Wonder how that plastic handles the heat of the coolant...? Any concerns since it was not designed for that?

Re: Coolant Overflow Tank - Factory in 72?

I bought this setup from Wes 4 or 5 years ago and it works perfect and the heat doesn't affect the plastic.

This one, attached to the core support, was said to be an original on a 72.

Mine looks nothing like that and I have no indication of one on the SPID. Looks like I'll be buying one from Wes when they are back in stock. Thanks!

Re: Coolant Overflow Tank - Factory in 72?

I have plenty of bottles and plenty of caps now. I am waiting on the mounting brackets. I had one bracket but Chance emailed me wanting one so that ate up my only bracket at this time. The cost of them will be $59.95 plus an additional $5.00 if you want the second hose that runs from the cap thru the hole in the right front inner fender. WES

Re: Coolant Overflow Tank - Factory in 72?

I was touring my local junkyard today and saw a 72 with a coolant tank. It appears to be identical to the one Steve posted. I remembered this thread and decided to take it. Unfortunately I didn't realize how brittle it was and some holes developed as I carried it out. It was mounted to the left of the radiator as in Steve's picture. The hose is 62" long. The glovebox door was missing so I couldn't check the SPID, and I'm not sure it was original to the truck as it was mounted with slot head screws. Here are a couple pictures just for reference.

Re: Coolant Overflow Tank - Factory in 72?

So it looks like the factory original coolant overflow bottles all connected at the bottom and didn't have a hose connection on top?

It's not an overflow tank, it's an "expansion" tank. By connecting on the bottom the coolant level will move up and down with heat cycles, always keeping the radiator full. The tanks that just connect at the top wont work that way unless they have a hose run inside to the bottom.

Re: Coolant Overflow Tank - Factory in 72?

When adding a overflow/expansion tank, do you need to change rad cap so it opens under vacuum to draw coolant back in.
Thanks.....Dave

Re: Coolant Overflow Tank - Factory in 72?

FirstOwner69 - I have some information for you. That tank you show isn't the same as part # 994230 as shown in med.bronze's photos above. 994230 was a dealer installed part that was put into many trucks before they were sold, but they are not factory. Those parts are VERY rarely seen as NOS. I've been looking for one for 2 years, and so far have just come up with a bracket, no bottle.

The photos you show are of an overflow bottle that is still sold by GM for motorhome and commercial vans. I have one in my garage right now - bracket is part #: 15996772 and teh bottle is part #:15687277. The difference between the two is that 994230 was made specifically to mount to the left side of the radiaror suppot, and there is no good spot to mount the bracket #15996772 on a pickup anywhere, as it's intended to go on the firewall on those commercial vans. You could potentially tweak it to work, but get ready, though, the bracket is $20 and the bottle is $72 list price.

Re: Coolant Overflow Tank - Factory in 72?

GMPartsDirect.com has #15996772 for $33.12 and #15687277 for $8.97. Doesn't show it fitting a 1972 pickup but the prices sure are different. They don't list #994230.

Re: Coolant Overflow Tank - Factory in 72?

Yeah, definitely easy to find those items cheaper online. Unfortunately they don't really work on these trucks, unless you want to do some fab. If you do, then it's possible to make it look a lot like the original dealer installed 994230.

Wonder where you'd mount a GM tank with an aux battery setup....opposite fender avoiding the J-blocks?

I picked up a tank (not original) from scrap yard and mounted on fender well, same side as overflow.
