63 deluxe heater w/Ranco heater control valve

I recently pulled my deluxe heater to put in an economy heater in my 63. There are several different heaters, but this is one of the few that has the heater control valve bolted to the core, and I have found little info on these cores over the years, so I figured Id document it here while it was out w/part numbers that I have to try and help the next person along. I have included pics and dimensions also. The heater core is made by Harrison and shows part # 3146344. The core in my truck shows it being built in 63 C, which I belive is March of 63. The heater unit itself is also made by Harrison and shows a stamp of H 04 63B. Im not sure what this stamping means. I believe it to be heater/4lever(deluxe) being made in February 1963. It used to have a Harrison sticker on the front of the assemble, you can see the remenants of it in the 1st pic. With the exception of the heater housing itself, the vent control and duct boxes were the same for my economy heater and deluxe heater. The hole in the back of pic 3 is where the cable comes through the file wall and into the box to adjust the heater control valve. The stampings here are just to the left of the copper tube that sticks out of the assembly.

Re: 63 deluxe heater w/Ranco heater control valve

Last few pics....if anybody needs any more for reference, please let me know. Im getting rid of the deluxe heater, but I can supply what pics are needed while I have it. The 3rd pic shows the access port to adjust the cable for the heater control valve.

Re: 63 deluxe heater w/Ranco heater control valve

I will take a look at the heater box off my C20, it still had the original core and heater control valve and I will take a look to see what numbers are stamped on it. I am curious now. Nice pictures, hopefully they will help someone. These original style heater cores are not seen very often anymore. Oh, I will also look and get the NAPA part # for the seal for the heater control valve in case someone needs to rebuild theres. I will be gone until Thursday night so I will try and post it up on Friday.

Re: 63 deluxe heater w/Ranco heater control valve

Thanks Bears63. Im interested in your stampings also. I have only seen a few, but so far I believe the codes are read correct. Problem is theres no literature (that Ive found)...I base this off VIN of the truck and based off stampings that GM used in that time period.

Re: 63 deluxe heater w/Ranco heater control valve

Heres a good pic of the valve seperated from the core. Neither the core or valve are available aftermarket as of the posting of this thread. I had to use a 63 deluxe core w/o the valve and have my tanks added to it. The valves are rebuildable.

Hey 1963c-10 I need your help again. My deluxe heater core tank is leaking by the arrow in pic. I need to order a 63 deluxe core w/o the valve but not sure about how to add the tanks.
Thanks

Re: 63 deluxe heater w/Ranco heater control valve

I ordered a tank from NAPA...I have the part # at home. I will call my NAPA dealer and see if they can pull it up for me. I took the new NAPA tank and the OEM tank down to my local radiator shop and they swapped the OEM tanks onto the new NAPA core. They have to be soldered on. My shop has a dip also that they place them in afterwards...guess it helps seal their work.

Re: 63 deluxe heater w/Ranco heater control valve

No problem. Let me know how it turns out. I have contact info for a guy who rebuilds the Ranco heater control valves. As far as I know, hes the only guy in the US that does. The valves are extremely hard to find, so be glad its just the core.

here is the link to his page:

Re: 63 deluxe heater w/Ranco heater control valve

There is an aftermarket heater control valve on ebay right now. New in the box.....those w/the 61-63 deluxe heater might want to check it out. The rarely pop up NOS and the repop looks pretty good. I have tried to locate some info on this part # & the manufacturer, but couldn't find anything. I don't know if its currently being reproduced or if this is an older part.

Re: 63 deluxe heater w/Ranco heater control valve

Hi. Don't know if you are on frequent enough to get this. I'm going through the same. Have a 63. I think my valve works OK but the core is shot. What did you do to change yours? I found a 63 Deluxe core at LMC but it doesn't have the configuration for my valve. Was thinking about just getting an inline valve to turn it on before I climb in the truck. I'm in CA so not too cold too often. Would be nicer to do from in the cab but seems very expensive to keep it original. Want to eventually do that but in the meantime trying to figure out an alternative so I'd be curious to know what you did to change yours. Thanks.
