Keepin' It in Budget build

hey all,
My name is Justin, and I am in grade 11 right now, trying to save up money to fix things on my truck. I bought the truck from my old hockey coach's son in March of last year. when he sold it to me, it was 3 on the tree, and he told me the transmission was shot, because it wouldn't go into reverse. So i dropped the transmission, and played with it a little, and it seemed fine, so i bought a conversion kit to change it to floor shift. Once it was back in, I had no trouble with shifting at all. somewhere along the line i got it road legal, because he was apparently not very good with electrical, so the whole thing will probably need to be rewired. i then drove it for the whole summer, and hardly worked on it because I didn't want to park it because it is so much fun to drive. And then it snowed. And towards the end of summer i picked up an '81 silverado for the engine and brakes. I traded the front cross member to a buddy for two doors and miscellaneous. Then for Christmas, my dad moved the camping trailer out of the shop, so i could work on my truck over the winter. So I pulled the bed off, and I will be doing lots of rust repair. And replacing the ugly rims and paint job. Somewhere along the line I will also build the 350 from the parts truck to replace the current 305

Looks like a good start and yours is in way better shape than my first 72 Chevy truck I bought when I was in 12th grade. I definetly agree with you on changing the color and rims.

thanks guys! I got a little done this evening. I tore apart the drivers side front end, to get it ready for a disk brake swap. When i tore it apart, i realised it had moog ball joints, but i tore the rubber cover, so i will just replace them with the napa ones i bought a few months ago. I also started sandblasting the upper control arm, but it got dark so i had to quit. I am planning on cutting the springs for now, to lower it. I have two different springs, the lighter ones off this truck, and the heavy ones off the '81. Which ones do you guys think I should use?

Its update time again! I got the front end back together and the booster/master cylinder/prop valve set up, I just have to run new brake line to the front , and find some brake hoses that will work because the ones off the '81 are way too long. Anyway, here are the pics

Thanks guys! I picked up some more goodies for the project after school today. The plan is to swap the 3.73 gears in this rearend into the rear end from the parts truck, and then get trailing arm perches welded on. That way the rearend will be wider, and it will be 5-lug to match the front.

I got tires on the front and set her down again. All I can say is wow. One coil lowers it a lot more than I expected! The brakes do not work yet because I havent found any good options for brake hoses yet. There wont be any progress for a week or so because we are going to be cleaning the shop up for my Dads 50th birthday party.

Its gonna be a little longer before I have any real updates because I have finals rigjt now, and I jave to study for them. I did drop the block off to get bored .030 and decked to square. I also found a place locally to make up brake hoses for the front.

I had time afyer my exam today so I got the brake hoses made up... $103 bucks later. I also ground the old spring perches and shock mounts off the rear end from the '80. I also picked up some patch panels for the driver side bedside, as well as a new wheel tub.

I got them from a place locally called gregg's distributors. They are a parts store for heavy duty equipment and also make up hydraulic and brake lines. It was $103 bucks for both, 50 of which was for labor to press the ends on.

I got most of the frame behind the cab blasted this afternoon. I also welded in my first patch panel in a door I got from a buddy. It had been in a 3-ton grain truck, which is why the corner was missing.
