302 zapper from a 283 block?

I was talking to some older gentleman the other day and he recommended I take the crank and cam out of a 327, through it into my 283 and presto I have a 302 zapper. He claims that with a set of camel hump heads this thing will rev to 11.000. Thoughts and opinions please! And how would one go about building a zapper?

No. If by some miracle it did rev to 11,000 i bet it wouldn't do it twice.

Re: 302 zapper from a 283 block?

As I recall you need an early 283 block. You can punch them .125" and have a 302. Put in 327 pistons and go. It's really a 301. It has to be balanced and blueprinted.

I have seen one of them rev HIGH. A buddy had one in a 64 Chevy II with fiberglass doors and hood. It had a Holley 3bbl. on it and 5.32 tailgears and was a real runner. It didn't last long but while it was running it was scary.

That being said, there are better power plants out there. I think the LS and LT4s can be built to produce more power, quicker revs, and much better reliability.

BTW the 283 with a 327 crank is a 307

He has that backward. It's the 283 crank (3.00") into a 327 block (4.00")
The whole object of high revving engines is de-stroking. It makes for quicker and higher revving, at the expense of torque.

What he told you would be a longer stroke (3.25") and smaller bore (3.875") Which turns out to be something that GM already did...307.

Not much of a truck motor either way.

I didn't even bother to address the RPM because the ignition system couldn't handle that anyway....

Re: 302 zapper from a 283 block?

I've heard of it. I believe pontiac did this in some of thier track cars (firebirds) back in the 60's for shorter tracks. HIgher and faster revs was the key. Suffered top end though if I remember correctly.

Re: 302 zapper from a 283 block?

The 327 block/283 crank is exactly what GM did in 67-69 with the 302s for SCCA racing. The short stroke would allow for higher RPMs and faster revving. Great engine underrated at 290HP.

Remember the engine in the video is a RESTRICTED engine. It will do a lot more once the restrictor plate is removed.

Good luck with the project buddy. Let us have a look at it when it's going please!!

Re: 302 zapper from a 283 block?

I have one in my 67 c-10. 327 block (small journal) with 283 crank and rods and 327 pistons. Real screamer, just not 11000! It' s been together for a while and in its heyday prob seen 8500. Wouldn't want to try it now through.

Re: 302 zapper from a 283 block?

Be careful listening to a bunch of geezers, telling you what to build....

As others have mentioned, a high revving engine in a 4500 lb. pickup isn't that big of a deal...Are you going to put 5.13:1 gears in it, to drive on the street??? to tak advantage of the revs???? I didn't think so...

A heavy vehicle needs as many cubes as possible, a 327 really isn't enough, my opinion, 350 is the bare minimum, a 406 SBC will make a good runner, been there..., going there again!!!

Re: 302 zapper from a 283 block?

With careful preparation and supercharging, you may be able to reach 11k revs without stretching a rod cap, at the least spinning a rod bearing, at the worst throwing a rod. For a truck, your better bet is more cubes, and leave the small CID high-rev stuff to the Camaros and such. 307s aren't actually all that bad. It just depends on what you want. You want fast, you're talking 383 stroker up to 454, properly set up. Forget about a 302, that's a waste for a truck.

Re: 302 zapper from a 283 block?

I thought about building a 302 with my old 283 crank but after a little research.... You have to use a 302 piston, the 327 piston compression distance (distance between the top of the piston and center line of the wrist pin)is all wrong for a 3" stroke. Basically you cannot use a stock 5.7" rod with a piston made for a 3.25 stroke in an engine that is a 3" stroke. It is way too late for math so I wont try to explain any further. You either need a different length rod with a 327 piston or stock rods with a 302 piston. Either way you are looking at $600 for either rods or pistons. Maybe you could find some vintage 302 pistons on ebay? SOunds like a fun engine to build though!

Re: 302 zapper from a 283 block?

If you have the right 283 block, it can be safely bored to 4". The 283 crank in a 4" bore does give 302 cubic inches. They are neat engines in something light......Like a Z28. But in a pickup, why go to all that trouble? 350s are dime a dozen. Get a late 1-pc seal one and rebuild that if you want to build something. You can tell everyone it's a 302 if you want to. I have heard the stories about 283s and 302s that would rev to 11 grand. But why? in a street vehicle you really don't need that. My .02

I would rather listen to a old geezer than a punk ass kid. I say build what makes you happy. If you want to buzz a small block to 11k go for it. Just dont take to much stock from what you read on here. Everyone is different thank god.

There are good and bad in both old and young. Before you build anything, do your RESEARCH.

Re: 302 zapper from a 283 block?

The DZ code 302 was a hot engine in Camaros.I think it's a bit lightweight for a truck. You can use a 350 crank in a 400 block for a 377 that is a destroked engine. It will have more RPMs than torque also but probably be cheaper to build. The rods and pistons for a 302 make the engine cost almost twice as much to build IIRC and at 11,000 you'll probably be doing it over.Rods are a weak link in the SBC so pony up the $$$ for good ones if you do it.Do lots of research on the 302 before dropping the $$$.
