i run mine between 600 and 800 rpm, but it kind of depends on how big a cam your running

sometimes to much idle will give as bad of a hesitation as not enough

Cool

I like mine at about 700 (roughly) in Park, and 550 in gear. It won't die, and sounds pretty good too. I have a 350 with a small cam and a automatic tranny. I think the stock setting is 600 in gear for my '72, but im not sure....

Smaller engines have a higher idle. Some V6 engines are set to 1000. Same with 4 cl. engines. I've always heard that automatics should be set to 800. That's what mine's set to.

When my 69 was a 2wd I had a 327 with a 700r in it, a performer intake with a 650cfm holley and the biggist cam you can get. My problem was to get it idle and not to die when I put it into gear. The problem was that the jets in the holley weren't the right size. So what I think you should do is take it in to a performance shop and tell them what going on and get them to fix it. The cost for me to get this done was roughly about $100.00 Canadian Dollers and man it had more power and it didn't die every time I put it in to gear.
Hope this helps and Good Luck
