40 gallon fuel tank

Has anyone put a 40 gallon fuel tank from a 74ish suburban into a 67 to 72 suburban ? I have been searching the forums and have yet to find someone who has done this. Is the frame width the same on a 74 burb as a 67 ? I emailed http://www.aerotanks.com/ for a quote. Looks like on the 74 tank you could rotate the tank 180 degrees for a possible fit with some small modifications. LMC tanks http://www.lmctruck.com/features/csb/CSBGTK.htm LMC has the measurements on the page. Thanks

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

The PO installed a 50 gal. tank on my 72 K10 burb so I would think you could get it to fit.
Not sure where he sourced the tank though.

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

My PO put a 44 gal in my truck; looks like a custom tank made to fit between the rails. No pics of it; I checked.

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

I have done one on 1leglance's 70 Suburban. Used crossmembers and skid plate from donor truck. I put a 31 gal tank in my 72 and was able to rotate it and make it work, but that didn't work on the 40 gal tank. Had to relocate the filler tube on the tank. No big deal. Took it to a radiator shop and was done in a matter of minutes. Patched the old hole too. I looked at the thread linked and if you're not using the stock 40 gal tank cross members, use something that ties into the upper and lower flanges of the frame. The stock cross member on your frame that you remove to fit the 40gal tank is what supports the rear spring hangers and keeps the rails parallel. If you create your own err toward overbuilt as opposed to underbuilt for that reason.

My burb came with an aux tank under the rear seat. It looks to be 40 gallons, I have a switch on the dash for it.

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

I have been loving my 40 gal tank ever since Nick was able to install it.

The donor was a late 80's Suburban and I cut/knocked out the rivets for the crossmember in front & behind the tank and we used those also. That gave me the factory skid (light wgt but helps).

Like Nick said a radiator shop was able to relocate the filler neck super eazy and I can crawl under and grab pics if you want them.

I believe the under seat tank is 21 gallons.

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

I know this thread is about replacing the stock tank with a 40 gallon unit, but I have an aux tank under my middle seat that is obviously designed to fit. The seat bolts back onto the top of the tank. When I got the burb from the original owner in 1995, the aux tank used a saddle valve to the left of the drivers seat. I since switched to a electric solenoid dual tank valve and have the switch on the heater control. I will put a few pixs of the tank here, if interested in more, let me know, it is currently out of burb as I am prepping for paint.

Whew!
When I first looked at that quick, I thought it was mounted to your front bumper

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

As a kid that grew up spending many hot summers on long trips sitting on that middle row bench on the way to family vacations, I can only imagine the headaches I would get with the smell of fuel from sitting on a fuel tank for hundreds of miles in the desert heat

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

No worse than having a gas tank sitting behind your seat, I think there are a few of those around.

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

I have a 50 gal tank on my 70 c20 Suburban... It looks like a home made job but it works good (no leaks). Had to re-do the trailer hitch to make it all work though.

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

I have a 40 gal tank in my SWB that came out of my Blazer. I got the truck from my high school buddy and I seem to remember him getting it from J C Whitney.. It has four long bolt that go through the bed floor.

That was my thought when doing these.
Could you post pics of what fixes you did to the trailer hitch?

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

Not trying to walk on your thread, just trying to get some like information.

Just picked up a 69 Burb and I think it has an 18 gal stock tank. Would like to install a used 25 or 31 gal unit.

What is the easiest combination to but in the original space?

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

Mine is an EFI 40 gallon tank and my install is almost exactly like what MosesBurb did for 1legance.

Hiding back behind my exhaust in that picture is the tank. Cut some rivets and moved one crossmember forward a ways then added another crossmember from a C20 pickup at the back and used factory straps to hold it up against the factory rub strips. Took the tank to a small service station that did radiator repairs and had them move the fill neck to the opposite side and fill the old hole.

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

My 67 burb fuel tank and my brother in-laws 69 burb tank. Are they 40 or 50 Gallon ? They look alike and are built alike. Factory ? Previous owner said its a 50 gallon in the 69. The 69 has the extra bracing around the tank for the tow hitch.

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

That's a 50 gallon from the same outfit that made magicoolbus's middle gas tank in the post above.

It seems they were a very popular dealer add-on in California.

Mine even had a very similar trailer hitch. I finally cut it off and installed a later hitch

Re: 40 gallon fuel tank

my old ambulance had a second factory tank added in the back. They had a filler neck up high like a blazer I think. When we converted the roof back we added a second factory filler neck. I'm just about to plumb it all back in.
