Re: 68 Gmc 2wd to 4wd

Realistically, you can't get much lower than a stock 73-87 style truck. The axle to oil pan clearance is the biggest issue.

But, as always....I recommend against it. "Conversion" to 4x4 really should be for things that were not available that way in the first place.

The best way to start a conversion is with a complete truck anyway, so rather than stripping it of the needed parts and scrapping the rest....buy a "better" truck to start with and modify it to meet your needs.

Re: 68 Gmc 2wd to 4wd

Pull the sheet metal off and find a 4x4 frame ! I am doing that right now to a 68 2wd GMC, I tried to sell it many time, but no one seems to want a 2wd by me ? The sheet metal is perfect so I will just repurpose it onto the 71 frame I got this summer.....

Found spring hangers most of the holes are already in the frame .Putting a 73-87 engine crossmember and have both differentials already.Rear is already leaf so no big there .I love it when a plan comes together!

Re: 68 Gmc 2wd to 4wd

Not sure how factory got these so low but here is a pic as low as I could get it before I started worrying about hitting the oil pan on a bounce.

I removed one of 3 leaves and flipped second spring to get a negative arch. I added overloads on the front shocks to prevent bottoming on pan.

I have since raised the truck for 265x70x17's. Flipped 2nd spring back over. The 14 bolt rear and BBC also convinced me to raise.
