coolant flow direction

Can someone show me a diagram of coolant flow through a big block please?

Specifically what I'm doing is replacing my standard direction water pump with a reverse flow pump to use with the new Kwik Performance serpentine kit. The problem I'm facing is that the inlet that I had my upper heater core hose going to on the standard pump is not on the new reverse flow pump. This new pump is only tapped for the small hose that runs to the front of the intake manifold. The new pump does not have the fitting location for where my upper heater core hose goes.

Where does that critter go?

Maybe I can get some pics up.

Re: coolant flow direction

I may be wrong but I believe that hose would be the return from the heater core. In which case with your particular water pump, that hose should go directly to the passenger side radiator tank.

Re: coolant flow direction

Thanks for the pic GRX.

Capt, ok, but I don't have a termination point for the upper heater core hose. Per the diagram shown by GRX, I don't have another inlet point on the pump. Just the little one on top that goes to the front of the intake like in the pic.

Maybe I need to find a diagram of a mid 90's truck hose route? That's what this serpentine kit and water pump is based on.

Re: coolant flow direction

The flow is going to be the same, just with the pump turning the other way. The pump is still pushing coolant into the block, all the other fittings outside of that are coming into the pump or suction. So to answer your question about the heater hose..............to the radiator

Re: coolant flow direction

Serpentine pump should be reverse ROTATION, not reverse flow.

LT small block was reverse flow.

Thanks for that clarification, I should be saying reverse rotation.

ok, but how? There is no provision for it. Am I missing a part? A special dual inlet upper radiator hose or something of the sort?

Re: coolant flow direction

Here's what I did, same situation. I have a reverse rotation pump from Edelbrock. All you're doing is eliminating the bypass hose that goes from the intake directly to the water pump.

Re: coolant flow direction

so upper hose goes to intake, lower hose goes to pump.

thanks a ton Boss

no wait, the lower needs to go the intake and the upper goes to the pump right?

Re: coolant flow direction

Some of the squarebody radiators have the heater hose return nipple on the passenger side radiator tank. I was thinking some of the '67-'72's did as well?

That's what I did - there is no provision for the 'bypass' hose to the intake from the water pump. Fluid goes to the heater core from my intake, comes back from the heater core through the inlet on top of the water pump - that's the only way to do it, since on my water pump that's the only fitting there is. On my firewall the fitting closest to the motor goes into the heater core, the next one over brings it back to the pump.
