I believe you can't use the gears because 3.73 is a 4 series carrier and 3.08 is a 3 series carrier. I believe 3.53???? And above are 4 series. I did buy and install 3.73 gears to replace my 3.08 gears they work because I specifically got 3.73 gears for the 3 series carrier. Got them from "Ron's Machine Shop" online and on eBay been using them 4years. It's been awhile so if my info needs correction I take no offence. Have a great day!

Yes if you have a 3.73 gear now your carrier is most likely a 4 series. There are spacers that are used at times. but that is if your running say 3.08 and want to go to a taller gear set and don't have a 4 series carrier. If your 3.73's are factory then you have a 4 series carrier. Like MO1968 stated the lowest gear you would be able to use on your carrier is 3.50 something.

GM12 bolts with 3.08 gears are a easy to find. I would (did) just swap the entire rear end. A GM12 bolt with 3.73 gears is highly sought after. Your phone will ring off the hook if you post a "trade" on Craig's list. Shoot, some would even volunteer to help you with the swap or just let you supervise.
