Roller Cam Running In
Hi There,
I have a fairly new short block that I have used to assemble a new engine for my C10. I have installed a new roller cam, hydraulic lifters and aluminium heads. Do I need to do any running in of the cam? Obviously the rings are seated etc, ive just never run a roller set-up before... |

Re: Roller Cam Running In
Me either ? I have built many engines and run in flat tappet cams I cant see that you would need to run in a roller cam at all but im sure some on here will know for sure ,,,,

Re: Roller Cam Running In
No, just assembly lube when building it and you should be fine.

Re: Roller Cam Running In
Since it's a roller you don't need to worry about keeping the rpm up for cam break in, but it's still a good idea to run it at a higher rpm (2000) for 10 minutes so you're sure the oil gets to and splashes everything in the motor. More oil pressure will ensure good supply of oil throughout the motor. And more oil flow helps clean out the crap you left in there and right into the filter.

Re: Roller Cam Running In
No real break-in for a roller setup. I like to maintain a higher than idle RPM for a few minutes to ensure everything is getting oiled, you're good to go after that. Be sure to get that break in oil changed soon, it'll be full of assembly lube and grit that might clog the filter.

Re: Roller Cam Running In
Even after knowledgeable people answering you, why not just back it all up with a call to the cam mfg.? Then, no worry about getting a good nite's sleep.

Re: Roller Cam Running In
In addition to using assembly lube and break in oil, I would also recommend priming the motor's oiling system before you fire it up. Its a simple and quick way to ensure that everthing has oil and that the oil pressure will come up right after initially firing the engine. I have seen motors run for some time before oil pressure comes up at initial firing due to air in the filter and pump. That assembly lube only does its job for so long.

Re: Roller Cam Running In
I would NOT ask anybody on this site about cam break in procedure. contact the manufacturer.
theres alot of myth and BS about cam brake in procedure. if you dont follow manufacturers instructions you void the warrenty plus no refund on parts plus who knows what metal debris you send through out the engine damaging it further contact the manufacturer for instructions and follow them carefully |
