Mounting holes for sport mirrors?

My '70 had no mirrors on it when I bought it, although it appears that someone had sport mirrors on it at some point. Since I am going to have a 71-72 front fascia on it I wanted to run sport mirrors anyway, but when I removed the paint I realized the PO had plugged the original mirror holes with bondo and they are much larger than the holes that had been drilled for the sport mirrors. I am plugging those, but do they need to be the same size for the sport mirrors? I ordered new mirrors from brothers and they have a backing plate and some small stainless screws so it doesn't look like I need to have bigger holes, but I wanted to make sure I'm not missing something. I'd like to drill any holes BEFORE going to paint.

Re: Mounting holes for sport mirrors?

Probably the best post out there for this. Let us know how it turns out, I have to do mine as well.

Incidentally, I've read where that 35" reference point should be 30" from the bottom of the rocker panel. I believe that's from the lower "body" of the rocker panel, not the edge on the back of the rocker panel, but it would be nice to confirm this. It would also be interesting to see if based on which the correct measuring point is, that the hole for the front mirror screw is 1" below the rim of the door, as demonstrated in the link provided above.

Re: Mounting holes for sport mirrors?

I used these dimensions and everything worked fine. Notice the right mirror will be further back than the left mirror. Truck looks way better than the camper mirrors on before.

Re: Mounting holes for sport mirrors?

Side note- I just got my sport mirrors installed, and I'm so glad I kept them. I almost got rid of them to go with an aftermarket mirror. The sport mirrors look nice and are very functional.
