Question Drum brake parts question

Since this seems to be a good place to ask about brakes...

What is the purpose of the flat dual forked bar that crosses horizontally between the brake cylinder and the axle/spindle that
separates and aligns the two pads in a drum brake setup? One end usually has a spring around the forked part.

Anyway one of my wheels doesn't have this part. Should I go find a replacement ASAP? Or is it just to control squealing or something?

Thanks.

If I'm thinking of the same part you are, it's a lever to apply the opposite shoe when the parking brake is engaged.
