NP205 Question

Good day all,
I made the mistake pulling the cover off of the rear of the front output shaft and all of the needle bearings fell out. I forgot that it had that type of bearing there. Does anyone know how many needle bearings there are suppose to be there?

Re: NP205 Question

I can't answer your question. But if ya use some grease or Vasaline to hold them in you could line them all back up.
If ya have a gap about the size of one or two then you know you answer.
Just like a u joint.

Re: NP205 Question

Ya, I did the grease trick. I have enough space for 1 more and that's what I was afraid of. I have lost one of the little suckers.

Re: NP205 Question

A good magnet might help ya find one if you know the general location.

I don't know how bad I would fret about one but I've never had one apart.

I did the same thing with a power steering gear.

Re: NP205 Question

Not often I can't find something but this isn't a quick one for me. Checked the factory service manual, chevy parts manual, np205 parts catalog and even the LoMax 205 conversion instructions from JB Conversions. Most only suggest the bearings none give me a count like the primary needles inside the case, 128 (32x4) and 15. The best picture is from JB Conversions and it looks full. Might just try giving them a call 337-625-2379 and see if they can tell you.

Re: NP205 Question

So, no one has any specific information. I count 40 and there is just enough space for one more. Would these have been manufactuted with an odd number??

Re: NP205 Question

Quad 4x4 has them.
Looks like the individual needles are not sold seperately too.

Re: NP205 Question

Is 40 the correct number though? I was unable to get an accurate count because they all fell out when I pulled the cover off. I have searched the floor of my shop and the inner case but I cannot find any more.

Re: NP205 Question

I will be back to my truck tonight or first thing in the morning. I have all the old bearings from when I rebuilt mine except I may have used one or two for some art project. Pretty certain that particular one is there and will have a look for you. If nothing else, I could even drop a few in an envelope to you.

Re: NP205 Question

Thanks dazza. Every other set of needle bearings in the NP205 has a specific number in the set......except that one. I appreciate you sending me the info.

Re: NP205 Question

I've also started going through my photos and posting for reference if anybody needs. So far, np205, sm465, and winch. A lot of duplicates but different angles just in case, I've often found what I'm looking for in the background of a picture that I didn't even know was there!

Re: NP205 Question

Give Off Road Design a call. They rebuild NP205s and should be able to give you a quick answer.http://www.offroaddesign.com/index.htm

Re: NP205 Question

I have two covers with the bearing still in them and both had 41 rollers. I counted them both twice to make sure my eyes where working.

Re: NP205 Question

Apparently, the one I had is a pile of needles, qty 39. The only other one I have is a 27 count.

So the mistake of pulling the cover, were you just curious as to what makes that thing tick or you planning to rebuild it?

Re: NP205 Question

No, I'm rebuilding it. I just wanted to be sure I didn't loose any. My mistake was not pulling it with caution.
