I Built This Truck From The Ground Up 3 Times, Starting With Dana 44's, Small Block, 700 R4, 208 Tc. Blah Blah Blah.

I Have A '72 3/4 Ton Sub I Picked Up Cheap. The Guy That Owned It Put The Body On An 80's 3/4 Ton Frame And Running Gear. I Bought It Because I'm Going To Take The Body Off The '72 And Put It On My '86.

I've Got So Many Hours And $$$ In My '86 Already, This Is The Best Way To Go! I've Got All The Bugs Out Of My '86, And It Runs Like A Bat Outta Hell.

Future Plans: Body Swap, 4l80e, Man. Shift. This Eliminates The Need For Computer, Etc... I'll Use A Floor-mount Spring Retent Slap-stick. I've Got This Set-up In My C10 Pro Street.

you wouldnt believe how nervous people in nice shiny cars get when i turn on my signal, hold the steering wheel from underneath with my knee, then run my hands across the top of the wheel like I'm turning....
I've had people in the oncoming lane slam on their brakes..... dont get me started on the rice grinders and the bumpin music, ridiculous spoilers, bad haircuts and spinner wheels, the stereos have more power than the engines

When I get back on Sunday, I'll post some picts of my new (to me) 68 4X4!! This is the second 67-68 4X4 Burb I've owned, I sold the first to qksilver in NC, so I had to find another!! I've owned several 2wd Burbs, but I have a soft spot for 4X4, with four K5's, and two 4X4 Trucks to my credit!!

Here is mine.it is a 68 gmc 920(candian truck)it is all complete and original(no it has not be repainted either) It was a sepical ordered truck and these are the factory colors:crazy: it was last on the road in 1973 and has 46000 miles on it:metal: I plan on getting it running this summer

4x4Poet 04-16-2006 05:52 AM

Randy Cox, that three-tone paint job on your '70 works. I'd have never guessed. :bowtie:

local13, did you divorce mount the NP205 behind the TH475? Roughly how much longer is the TH475 than a TH350/TH400? Is the TH475 a 3 or 4 speed?
You've got one heavy duty rig, there. I think your rig's wheelbase is 5 or 6 inches longer than a 67-72 burb (126"), so be sure to measure carefully before body swappin' commences.

Re: Post Your 4wd Suburban Pics

Thanks 4x4 poet that paint scheme was already on there when I got the burb as for the black on bottom that dark color hides all the holes,FOR NOW I too like the color scheme this vehicle came from henderson n.c.anyone recognize it,anybody.

Re: Post Your 4wd Suburban Pics

Beast, Great shots. That dark green is my choice. My '72 is a metallic dark green, but it's not stock. When I get to that point, I'm going back to factory dark green maybe even that non-metallic hunter green or whatever it's called. I can tell by your action shots you have got the right combo of parts that ''beast'' performs.

Re: Post Your 4wd Suburban Pics

Poet, The th475 is a th400 with flat cut gears instead of helical cut or angle cut gears. They only came in GMC motorhomes. I don't think they were ever factory on any 4x4 vehicle. They whine a little. The design idea is once the trans shifts, the gears ride flat against each other instead of constantly riding at an angle and pushing away from each other, creating more wear and friction. Perfect application for pulling, but not for a ''hot rod'' application. It shifts a little rough compared to a basic th400 . So externally same dimensions as th400 and it is married to my 205. I have the planatary half of a 203 bolted to the after end of the 205, making it a doubler set up so my driveline is a bit shorter than stock. It works perfect. Also, the average temp is dramatically decreased. I run a trans pow-steering radiator and brake fluid external coolers. It is a 3 speed. Thanks for the info on wheelbase length, I wasn't aware of the difference. Hey guys, keep in mind I'm not a transmission transfercase expert but I've been on a crash course since I started working on this truck about ten years ago. I'm getting there out of neccessity. But you get the basic idea, I hope. local13.out.

Special K. Nice ride, great idea. Your 80's and 90's erra frame is a good choice. In my experience the 60's and 70's frames are a bit flimsy. This is my reasoning behind my 86 sub chassis being used for my 72 body transplant, that and the fact I've got about 90% of my overall labor and $$$'s in the frame itself.

Here is a picture of my 86 and 72 subs soon to be joined forever. I am taking off the 86 body and replacing it with my 72 body. see pic's this is my homemade photo chop-scissors-copy- style ''duh''.any way you can get the basic idea. Keep in mind this is my first attempt at photo alt, It would have probably been easier just to do the swap and take the pic's.

In the bottom pic I used the existng dual fender but I have a pair of after market step side fenders that are 4'' wider than stock, so the finished product will have matching round wheel wells. local13hutch Out.

Thanks!! Actually the only part that is green is the hood. Orginally the Burb was yellow. An engine in 1992 totalled the truck and warped the hood so bad that water would pool there when it rained. So, a junkyard hood sits in its place.;)

I do enjoy taking the old girl offroading. I figure that the body is so shot that it really doesn't matter if I scratch or dent it.:metal:  :hm:

vtblazer....Your truck sittin there stock with those hub caps just the way it is, in my eyes is meaner and more capable than anything on the market to date past present or future. I know that in the snow nothing works better than that narrow foot print.

Longhorn71...I love that paint combo,it looks to be in better shape than my 72. when I got mine it was re painted and was sportin some bondo but the repaint was hiding the sins ,Atleast when you get original paint it might be a little ''ruff'' around the edges but you know what ya got. Nice find good luck on bringin her back to life ...

Here's mine, been over a year since I saved it from the crusher. All stock except the 454 and some other parts but otherwise it's all original. :metal: It runs but I haven't driven it on the road. It'll move itself but I'll bet that turbo 350 is tired. The wheels are 16.5"x9.75" OEM type steel and the tires are 33x12.50's. The left front tire is a MudKing, right front is a Cooper Discoverer A/T, and the rears are Baja WideTrac A/T's. Good enough to roll on! Right now I'm trying to save money for brake hoses, a turn signal switch, and other stuff it needs to be street legal. These pics are a month or two old, I've washed the truck since then. Don't know what I'll do about the paint, I guess later on the whole truck will be primered and repainted the factory yellow and white, the yellow paint on the interior just needs to be buffed and it'll look like new inside, well, sorta.

EDIT well the pics don't wanna work, here's the link to 'em. If someone can resize 'em for me I'd appreciate it, hadn't figured out how yet.
