Suburban quarter replacement

I did some searching and found some threads on lower quarter replacement but, they were all from 2014 or older and I am wondering if some new replacement panel has come to market. The photos show what I am having to repair.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...80#post4359780 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=577312 One shop I talked to wants to use a bed side to replace everything from the glass down. I don't know all of the differences between trucks and Suburban, but I'm not sure this would save any labor over doing two lower quarter patch panels. Someone else said that a Blazer side would work well and again i don't know the differences. Any help or guidance would be appreciated. |
Re: Suburban quarter replacement
I cant help, but I'm in for the updates as mine has a fair amount of rust and bondo back there, and will have to be replaced at some point.

Re: Suburban quarter replacement
lmc # 38-7838 - behind driver door
lmc # 38-7802 and 38-7803 - rear quarters The top part you may be able to just pop out from the inside |
Re: Suburban quarter replacement
Thanks for the part numbers!
From the LMC picture it looks like I would also need #38-7270 in order to replace the entire wheel well lip. If so it looks as if it ends right before the fuel fill. Is that correct? |
Re: Suburban quarter replacement
See Chip Foose, He can pull that dent out.

Re: Suburban quarter replacement
I dunno if Wes is back to selling parts. If so he's usually well stocked in burb replacement panels. You might give him a shout.

Re: Suburban quarter replacement
I ordered a bunch of patch panels for my burb build. The long piece between the door and wheel well looked good but wouldn't lay flat. One of the biggest problems was that between the three pieces none of the pieces lined up. The little concave wheel lip part was different on each piece! I've been told that a shortbed pickup side is a good match and can be made to fit. All of the LMC parts look like they won't go up high enough on the body below the window. IF the bed side will match up that might be your best bet.

Re: Suburban quarter replacement
Most likely, that is a new part they offer, when I was looking it was not an option so i just go the fron and back, but my arch was in decent shape.

Re: Suburban quarter replacement
whenever you find thr right patches make sure the wheel arch has the small indent around it. I overlooked that and noticed it after I burned it in, that it did not have that indent.

Re: Suburban quarter replacement
When I started buying panels for my wife's burb all burb specific pieces were non existent. No one makes a complete burb quarter so you would have to cut one off a clean tub. My plan is to use long bed bed sides for patches. I did find out that the front fender area behind the wheel is the same as the lower area behind the wheels on a burb in the rear. ( I believe it was shortbedclayton that pointed this out in his crew cab build) So get the lower fender patch and a good long bed bed side and you should be able to get fixed up. I have since gotten 4 out of 6 burb quarter pieces that hers needs. It really would make a good crew cab build.

Re: Suburban quarter replacement
I actually just got some long bed bed sides from Leon so I can use them as patches for the wife's burb. I just need some more of that time stuff to get to that.

In the photo below the red line indicates where the long bed bottom edge would be different if what I was told is true. The reason I am asking is I have read here where people have used short bed sides or Blazer sides but with no explanation as to why, which panel do pick. Like you I have the opportunity to get a long bed side but if it is a bunch more work it may be better for me to pass on it. If it isn't too much trouble could take a couple of minutes and compare the sides you got from Leon with your Suburban and see it that is true? I know how the bottom edge attaches is different between the pickups and the Suburbans. Thanks in advance for any assistance. |

I got lucky and came across a rust free set of skins for when I get to that point on my panel truck. There are still some out there but tuff to find.

Some guys have all the luck!
I missed one on CL a couple days after the wreck. |
Re: Suburban quarter replacement
Does anyone know if someone from this forum or one of the big parts suppliers has ever formally requested suburban quarter panels to be manufactured?
I realize that this would a significant investment, from engineering to manufacturing and the ROI would certainly have to be considered. What I'm thinking here, is a full length quarter skin that goes up to the window area and stops short of the tail section. As the tail section is already available, thus it might help keep the cost down. With entire truck cabs, bedsides, floors, etc., available now, I'm thinking there's definitely a demand for such a product. Finding good usable suburban quarters off a donor vehicle for folks who need them, simply isn't an option anymore. |
Re: Suburban quarter replacement
I'm with you Dave. Unfortunately, I doubt the demand is there. Just look at how little traffic this side of the forum regularly gets. Theres probably only 2 dozen or so of us the regularly check in over here.
I posted a thread a year or so ago about the popularity of the Suburban as opposed to the rest of the vintage SUV market. It still floors me how under valued these things are, and how under utilized they are compared to Defenders and FJs in the vintage overloading scene. I do wish the fenders were available, as both of mine are full of rust and bondo. |
