How to make suburban quarters

I am putting this on here as info for those who need larger panel areas on burbs and panels. These are quarters made form patch/repair panels that are readily available. These quarters are made from door skins, tail light sections, and the lower quarter area for behind the rear wheel and also a marker lamp for the 68-72's.

Earl That is beautiful. I have your videos and they have helped tremendously but I am now working on the section behind the dooors on both sides of my panel truck. What sections do you use for this?

Beautiful. Right now I'm welding patches on a '75 Caddy with my son for practice before we start welding on stuff we care about. Wondering what wire you use for this work? The standard MIG wire is too hard, we're not coming up with anything close to that perfect finish you have.

Re: How to make suburban quarters

big blue suburban/panel sides are fairly easy to make on a brake if you need a longer panel than a door skin will make. Otherwise you can weld two skins together to get a longer panel. I hope this is what you are asking about, if not so pics may be helpful.

zac I use .025 easy grind made by esab. It seems to be a little softer but still somewhat hard to work/grind.

Great post and very awesome welds. What kind of shielding gas are you using?

Re: How to make suburban quarters

Very nice work! I am curious as to how you grind your welds so flush. Do you use an angle grinder until its close then finish with something else like a 220 grit? Or are you just really careful with the grinder?

Re: How to make suburban quarters

I use a CO2 argon mix and yes I try to be real careful when grinding.

Re: How to make suburban quarters

Thanks for the post and the info on welding supplies. I am going to try some of the esab wire and see if it helps me any.

Re: How to make suburban quarters

I think they are tri-plus. Smitty provided the sheetmetal. The tail light lenses are different but some guys have used truck tail lights. Check Hart_Rods's burb.

Did you hammer and dolly after you got done welding. If not how did you keep it so straight. Seems like mine always need a little massage afterwards.
