Shawn I believe I'm running a similar gasket as you are where the metal flange is surrounded by rubber. I shouldn't have an issue with cork ones since I have somewhat of a lip so maybe I need to try some and be sure not to over tighten

Maybe its the covers. I had very good luck with those gaskets, but I had Mickey Thompson valve covers on that engine.
