67 rear z only

Its time to do something about the back of my truck. Its pro street with stock trailing arms. I have 31/18r15 on the rear and 215/75r15 on the front. My front has drop spindles and spings and works really nice. By the time I got the rear down to where I loved the stance I barley have any coils springs left. I cant run blocks because of the very deep backspacing on my rims. I also have a spare rust free frame to work with. So sitting in my garage the other night I start brainstorming (always scary lol) could I use the back of my spare frame to Z my current frame and run stock springs. It looks like it would work to me but thought I would ask for some input before I start hacking lol. I know I could do it and my friend is a certified welder so my question is will it work. Im on a budget I would love a rear kit but its outta my reach for the time being. Just trying to build a low budget hotrod. Thanks for your input.

Re: 67 rear z only

Yes it can be done. You don't really need an extra frame.....

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Here is another rear Z: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=485504

There was another guy on here who welded steel tube sideways in the frame to allow the spring to sit higher up. Hard to explain. Think of a cupped lower control arm but on the top in the rear.

Re: 67 rear z only

Those are some cool trucks. Pics really helped. Do you think it would be ok to just z the rear and not the front?

Whats your goal? How much clearance do your LCA's have? Im a fan of Z'd trucks. If you are drag racing you could do a 2-3'' Z and run longer and softer springs to help with your launch. If you are just driving you can get away with going lower or not having to avoid every pothole and railroad track.

Re: 67 rear z only

It will be mostly street drivin with the occasional 1/8mile pass as theres a track not far from me. I am hoping a 4" z will help me recover some of the factory suspension as its a pretty ruff ride right now. Back end bounces around quite a bit lol.

What does the rear suspension consist of now? Take some pics of it & post them up.

Re: 67 rear z only

Consists of real short springs. Home made c notches. No shock relocators or adjustable panhard bar. I cant use lowering blocks because of very deep backspaced rims and 18.5" wide mickey thompsons. I was thinking about using the back of my spare frame to z it because its less hacked up and in better shape then my current frame.

Re: 67 rear z only

It would work for what you're planning. It would allow running a taller spring for improved travel along w/OE length shock travel. I would still change up the shock mounting if/when doing the work to improve their angle so they'll perform better.

Just a thought. If you do decide to do a front Z I would just make all the modifications to the spare frame then swap it all over. I Z'd and SFBD'd my 75 and even with the front clip and engine removed it would have been wayyyyy easier to do with a bare frame. Plus you can paint and get everything clean.

Re: 67 rear z only

Im not planning on Zing the front. Just the back. My front works good with drop spindles and springs.
