Re: Is this VIN plate original?
Great thanks for sharing that. Almost certainly that VIN plate in question is bogus. Good to know that bogus VIN plates are popping up. Buyer beware.

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
Hey Pete, is the VIN matching up with the Title and vehicle, or are you just trying to make sure it is the original plate that came with the vehicle?

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
Just curious if it was the original plate for the truck. Since the truck is a 72 model I don’t see how that VIN plate is anything other than a reproduction.

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
“The seller notes that reproduction serial-number tags were affixed to the driver-side door jamb after the primary photo shoot.”
Looks like fraudulent VIN plates are indeed appearing: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...c10-pickup-42/ Is the pillar vent in a correct location? Looks off center.

I’m glad the build date project is able to pay some dividends like this, It never occurred to me that it might be able to help spot fraudulent trucks.

There are several other issues with this pickup that others can hash out w the seller on BAT if they so choose.

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
Very informative thread. This is really something that never crossed my mind. I guess THAT'S the reason I buy cheap junky stuff, there's no reason to forge any of it!

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
That's true ! the new to the hobby guy's that go to a "classic dealer " and buy a junk yard LS swapped , cut down frame truck because someone slapped a shiny paint job on it are the guy's I feel bad for . Maybe threads like this will help them find the right truck they are looking for before they spend big money on junk .

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
Look at the pictures of the frame chop closely, That will probably scare you way more than the vin tag... I’m not a fan of making the cut at the front spring hanger, there’s the potential for a lot of load right there, sure fish plates help but I’m still not a fan. I wouldn’t buy it on that detail alone. The bucket seats appear to be mounted with bolts and washers at the rear. Hard to tell for sure on the seat mounts though. At first I was speculating this might be a converted 2wd frame but it’s a long bed 4x4 frame, front spring hangers are riveted. It may be a big money build but there’s still several things that drive me nuts about it.

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
My vent matches CG's. At first I thought it was centered until I looked at it. Thus as usual I was wrong.....

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
As an aside, I cannot believe how many trucks I've seen on BAT with non-OE style pop rivets affixing the VIN. It's almost the exception to see OEM style rivets. There's one live right now that has a mix of OE and non-OE rivets.

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
That's crazy to me, BAT should probably know better. Mind you, they don't seem to know much about our trucks except that they bring money when they look nice.

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
By the looks of those rivets they look like factory they are star shaped instead of round I would say that’s a original plate.

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
Not always a good indicator these days any more as there are sources for rosette style rivets that look like factory.

Re: Is this VIN plate original?
The VIN plate in the original post is a style only seen on 1970 model pickups and therefore has to be assumed to be bogus.
