Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

Doesn't seem like a big deal to most of you I'm sure, but I had a friend down from up north today and we decided to go cruising. I've had the truck roadworthy since early summer, but haven't put more than about 8 miles on it at one time. I had no stumbles, the trans shifted fine and it drove straight.

I have to say it felt good, even though I'm still not sure I'm going to keep it.

I did stumble upon what appeared to be a halfway clean 68-72 short step not far from home though, hood's off and it has no engine apparently (could only see the side of it from the road).

Sorry for the ramble, just wanted to share. Anyone else cruise at all today?

took my K-5 to the lake to go mountain bike riding

Always a toss up on whether to even unload the bike, as hitting some trails in the Blazer is fun too

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

Sunny day here so the wife and I took out the 70' and we just got back. Looks like we have a bunch of nice days in the next 2 weeks so we will cruse every day that we can. The 70' comes off the road for winter at the end of the month so we only have 3 weeks left.

esll.

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

well my truck these days has been very theripudic to say the least. I've been dealing with workers comp the past year after working in a dirty air environment. To make a long story short my sytems these days are now high blood preasure, clogged nasal passages and swollen tonsils, so it makes it very difficult to breathe...it's like breathing through a straw these days. Anyhow on my bad days I drive the truck not because i want to (i do of course) but becaue I don't trust driving my lil nissan around town. Some days I have a hard time getting trhough the day, dizzy spells, shortness of breathe, unfortunately if I have to be on the road, I take OLD FAITHFUL (68 stepside). It's and instant pick me up, today I was able to go to my doctors appointment, pickup my daughters cadilac escalade power wheel from toys r us, and make it home without taking someones bumper off.....I had to get a cortozone shot just to get through the day....thats my story sorry for the babble but it was nice driving old faithful today.....

P.s.
never get hurt on the job, after that they only treat you like a liability.....

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

I'm just feeling good knowing that the 68 isn't going to die on me on long runs I did the front brakes, front end and electrical work myself. Installed the engine 6 years ago by myself. I've never touched the trans. I really was afraid to take it very far. Now that I've gone 75-ish miles, I'm already planning a 240 mile roundtrip

I need to get the door weatherstripping installed first though, it gets a wee bit drafty in the cab right now.

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

The only cruising I did today was to take some old tires and wood cabinets over to the other side of the farm.

We are getting old tires together to take to the county road crew so they can use the shredded tires in asphalt.

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

I worked out of my '69 C-10 today. It went and checked on a few jobs and picked up some supplies, but nothing much. I drove it a bunch this weekend, and I drove the '67 C-30 a little bit on Sunday.

I`ve been running my K2500 everyday for a couple weeks.Went a bit over 100 miles yesterday.My`92`s not running.I`m pulled the Highlander for maintainence/repairs and was running it everywhere since August.A 100 mile day is about normal for me.

Glad the cruising went well for you. Nice to know it all went well. The first few drives with a vehicle after getting it going are always a little nerve racking, at least for me.

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

Drove the K20 80 miles last night at 1:00am to drag my roommate's firebird back home after he hit a white tail at 80mph on the interstate. It smashed the whole front end and the antlers went through the drivers side windshield. The firebird is toast, but we had some beers and our first deer steaks of the year last night at 3:00am. He looked super pissed this morning riding his schwin to class.

Now all I have to do is put that tpi setup on the pickup!

TJ... you went up to see Jason?
I gotta get the longhorn outta storage and replace the starter/flywheel and try to fix the oil leak so i can bapk the burb for the winter... the freeways here are already covered with that brine salt water crap. (it's not below freezing, but they are worried about ice )

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

If he drove the 69, and you didn't get pics of the two together, I'm gonna kick you in the nads when I finally get to meet you.
Then again, I never got a single photo of it when I met him in Chicago back in 05. I realized it as he was banging into 2nd gear headin home and I was ready to hit the road to get home in the other direction.

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

gotta love them first long drives. i got mine on the road for the first time back in july. i drove it to work for two weeks, which is only like 10 miles. then me and my buddies were getting ready to go this car show 250 miles away. so me and my cuz were throwing me truck altogether for the show then took it to get coffee at 3am. then we set out on the drive and i was surprised nothing broke and didnt have any issues but i was kinda worrying all the way there haha. then we went to another show that was all weekend which was only 50 miles away and stayed over. on saturday night after the show we were cruising the streets with thousands of other cars and then my truck lost all power while doing about 30mph on a main rd with street rods all around me. on the side of the road trying to figure out what was wrong turned into someone running back home to get the car trailer. but i got a laugh out of it when i got 3rd in my class with a truck that 6 of my friends pushed in the show on sunday. when we got back home and it turned out to be a ground that wasnt tight, oh well live and learn...

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

Good to read about all this driving of the classics. I just returned to home after a 3,500 mile trip in my 72 C30 MoHome (402 BB and 4 spd.) and had a great time. Maybe I have too much confidence in these old Chevs and GMCs, but I drive them EVERYWHERE. One Blazer goes long, long miles on hunting trips and I take it into places that most people would never go - and where any breakdown would be a REAL problem. Also, I have bought a 72 GMC on the East Coast, checked it over and drove it straight here to NM - not a problem, and drove my 69 C80 out here from Illinois in a blizzard that started just as I picked it up. These things are to be driven and used - mine look pretty good but I am not going to restore or "pretty up" any of them very soon.

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

I thought I was the only one crazy enough to do that.
I flew out to Washington state, bought the burb sight unseen. Drove it 3 or 4 miles, and said... lets load it up! Then drove it to Ohio.
What fun is a road trip, if you KNOW you'll make it home on time?

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

I have two trucks I drove from California.Well, just sold one.The only reason I drive anything newer is the winter road salt that ruined the first batch of these trucks around here.

Bottom line...these trucks are at their best when driven. And,are appreciated the most then, too.I love that dash and looking over that hood. It`s all the same.Look behind you to see which 67-72 you`re driving. Is there a bed or seats? How far back is that tailgate? Is there a roof back there?A seat or two?A large enclosed cargo area accessible from between the seats? Is there a roof over your head? Are there six knuckleheads back there babbling?Or,is there a kitchen, tow boom, flatbed????Up front they`re all the same.

I've taken mine to charlotte twice this year (110 miles one way) and to Clemson several times (about 45 to 50 miles one way.)

It's fun to jump in and go isn't it?

Re: Put about 75 miles on the truck today.

I woke up with a flat on the 06 Crew Monday morning. So I fire up the 69 and still have not fixed the flat on the 06. It is a lot of fun to drive the 69. It is over 20 miles one way to work for me.
