Need Suggestions - Help with not sleeping

I was wondering if there are any others out there that have problems sleeping and what if anything you guys and gals are using/doing as are remedy?

I've always been a fairly light sleeper but the past while I've been having issues either falling asleep or staying asleep. I work regular hours during the day (no graveyard shifts) I normally go to sleep around 9:00 - 9:30pm as I always seem to wake up early in the morning regardless of what time I go to bed. I found if I leave it to later to hit the hay, I'm lacking sleep the next day. I hate rolling around in bed tossing and turning all night!

I've woken up feeling alright through the day, but exhausted in the evening, which isn't so bad, to feeling like a bag of poop in the morning, and dragging myself through the day as I've gotten almost no sleep the night before.

I don't want to look into the heavy prescriptions, looking for more natural things. I've tried having a shower before bed but most times I feel refreshed and awake more than sleepy. I've tried herbal teas which has given me okay results for initially falling asleep. Next up I'm thinking of trying melatonin tablets.....

Can I hear your ideas? (sorry for the long story)

Re: Need Suggestions - Help with not sleeping

I avoid caffeine in the evenings.
I've used melatonin, available about any place vitamins are sold.
And, I generally lie in bed and read until I'm sleepy. When I read the same paragraph 4 times & it says something different each time, I know it's time to turn off the light.

But sometimes even that doesn't work. Sometimes I'll sleep for an hour & wake up, then toss & turn for 2 hours before I fall back asleep; then I drag my butt around all the next day. On those days I do my best not to doze off in the evenings.

Re: Need Suggestions - Help with not sleeping

I try to avoid caffeine in the evening, or keep it to a minimum, and not eat too much before bedtime. I usually go to bed about the same time each night. Sometimes taking a benedryl helps me doze off.

Here's a similar thread from another board, might be some helpful info:

Re: Need Suggestions - Help with not sleeping

I have the same sleep troubles.
The way I have been able to maintain a good nights sleep are:

No caffeinated drinks after lunch.

Do not eat dinner just before bed time, for me I try to eat dinner around 5 or 6 pm. Plenty of time to digest for a 10 o'clock bed time.

I take a multi vitamin every morning.

Then about 45 min to an hour before bed, I take a Melatonin plus tablet. (3mg Melatonin with 25mg Theanine). I buy these at Costco, and they are made by Schiff.

Start out small on the Melatonin, since Melatonin can create really vivid dreams. Which a lot of times is ok, but if you have a troubling dream it can be disturbing.

The above has been my habit, and I have been able to maintain a much better sleep pattern since practicing it.

Re: Need Suggestions - Help with not sleeping

Exercise! Unless you have a very physical job, you probably don't get enough exercise. I had trouble sleeping a while back. Tried reading before bed, tried using music to fall to sleep, tried melatonin... nothing really worked well. Went swimming with my wife for an hour and a half and slept like a log that night. Rode 14 miles on my mountain bike that weekend and slept like a log again.

Humans aren't meant to sit at a desk or behind a wheel all day long. Even a half hour of exercise each day make a huge difference to how well I sleep that night (and it keeps you slim and healthy too!).

Re: Need Suggestions - Help with not sleeping

If you mind is active while you would like to be asleep, count backwards from 300 by 3s..

300, 297, 294, 291, 288... etc.

You will concentrate on trying to figure out what comes next you will quit thinking about whatever it was keeping your mind active. I have done this and by the time I reach 0 I usually end up going to sleep pretty easy. If counting by 3s gets to easy... change it to 4s, or 6s.. and up it to 400 or 500.

Re: Need Suggestions - Help with not sleeping

Like some have said ,,find out if you need a cpap machine ,,I know a few people who swear by them.. and like others say ,,eat early not late ..

I do not eat a lot of meat and especially not close to bed time ,,I eat lots of veggies and drink lots of water and get as much excercise I can durring the day ..
Eat good food that gives you good bowel movements to get good sleep..
