Weird problem ... dark blue screen of death?

So Im running Window 7 on my laptop. Yesterday it wouldn't boot up all the way. Did the welcome screen thing, click on my name, and the screen would just be dark blue with only the curser to be seen.

I turned it on and off several times. It would come up with windows shut down incorrectly how to you want to start up. I tried different modes. In safe mode it would be a dark screen with the safe mode words in each corner.

Dunno why but I turned off the wireless part of my router, that's how I use the internet on my laptop at home. Few seconds after I turned the wireless off on comes my computer screen just like its supposed to. Turn the wireless back on and Whaalaaa ... I'm here asking for help.

I ran a scan but nothing came up out of the ordinary ... any other ideas?

Really sounds like a virus to me. I would try a system restore for a few weeks back and see if it's still doing it.

Download Malwarebytes and run it

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebyte...=dl&tag=button

It always seems to find viruses for me that normal antivirus doesn't. I used to work at a computer store around here. Also, I would run CCleaner as well, just to pick up some performance.

They were pretty much standard procedure before we gave a customer a computer back. Also, if you turn the wireless off on your laptop does it change anything? It may be a bad wireless card on the laptop, and turning the router off is just letting it continue since there are no networks to try to connect to.

My favorite saying: Computers are like old testament God. All kinds of rules, no mercy.

Re: Weird problem ... dark blue screen of death?

Ive already ran the long versions of my virus check and malwarebytes and nothing comes up bad.

I will say that I accidentally shut my machine off while carrying it from one room to another after I posted that. Stupid on off button is in a really bad spot, easy to shut off machine if you hold it wrong. Anyway, now I cant get it to boot up correctly even with the router off.

Time to take it in to a shop and hopefully get it repaired, or at least get all my stuff off the hard drive. I dont think Ive even had this thing a year yet. No idea if I even have the receipts or paper work for it....Blah!

A Blue Screen of Death, also called a STOP Error, will appear when an issue is so serious that Windows must stop completely.

A Blue Screen of Death is usually hardware or driver related. Most BSODs show a STOP code that can be used to help figure out the root cause of the Blue Screen of Death.
Windows 7 includes a disk checking tool called CHKDSK which is similar to the "scandisk" tool from older versions of Windows.
This application scans your hard drives for errors such as lost sectors, bad sectors and corruption.

You can launch CHKDSK using two methods (the former being the easiest):
http://www.w7forums.com/use-chkdsk-check-disk-t448.html

You should periodically use the Check Disk tool to check the integrity of disks.
Check Disk examines disks and can correct many types of common errors on FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS drives.
One of the ways Check Disk locates errors is by comparing the vol¬ume bitmap with the disk sectors assigned to files in the file system.
Check Disk can’t repair corrupted data within files that appear to be structurally intact, however.
You can run Check Disk from the command line or through a graphical interface.

Running Check Disk from the Command Line
You can run Check Disk from an elevated command prompt or within other tools. At the elevated command prompt, you can test the integrity of drive C by typing the following command:
chkdsk C:

Check Disk then performs an analysis of the disk and returns a status message regarding any problems it encounters.
Unless you specify further options, Check Disk won’t repair problems, however.
To find and repair errors on drive C, use this command:
chkdsk /f C:

When you use this command, Check Disk performs an analysis of the disk and then repairs any errors it finds, provided that the disk isn’t in use. If the disk is in use, Check Disk displays a prompt that asks whether you want to schedule the disk to be checked the next time you restart the system. Click Yes to schedule this check.

The complete syntax for Check Disk is as follows:
CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]]

The options and switches for Check Disk are used as follows:
volume Sets the volume to work with
path/filename Specifies files to check for fragmentation (FAT16 and FAT32 only)

/F Fixes errors on the disk
/V Displays the full path and name of every file on the disk (FAT16 and FAT32); displays cleanup messages if any (NTFS)
/R Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /F)
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary (implies /F)
/I Performs a minimum check of index entries (NTFS only)
/C Skips checking of cycles within the folder structure (NTFS only)
/L Size Sets the log file size (NTFS only)
/B Re-evaluates bad clusters on the volume (NTFS only; implies /R)
