I am working on my 71 which has a 350. I am trying to mount the alternator but having some issues with belt alignment and the belt rubbing the pivot bolt. The pulleys for the water pump and crank seem to be lining up fine, but the alternator needs to go forward slightly. Is there supposed to be any spacers between the bracket and the head or could I be overlooking something else?

Are all the brackets matching or are you building as you go. I.E. maybe long water pump and crank pulleys and short water pump alt brackets. Just a thought alot run into this problem. A little mor info may be needed. Hope this helps RJ22

If it is the original setup it could be the wrong belt causing the alt to be leaning out to far. But I guess I should ask with AC or not?

Here are a couple of pictures of the brackets. Excuse the blurriness. I think my kids have got a hold of the camera.

I had always assumed that these were the original brackets. The pickup was pretty much untouched and has been in the family for over 30 years. Does not have A/C. There shouldn't be any issues with mix and match bracketry or diff length water pumps. I ordered the water pump and the belts for a 71 and it ran this way for years until I disassembled it.

Maybe if it is of just a little bit I have in the past used a washer to either bring the alt. in foward or push it out just a bit.

Can you post a pic of the belt alignment from the side and maybe the best you can get of the water pump just to be sure the parts store gave you the right one. By the looks of the ear (mounting bolts of the pump that I can see IIRC looks like you got the right on) but we can't see to much of it. This may help also.ATACHED PIC.

I measured it and it is a short pump. I'm thinking about some short spacers to bring the bracket forward, but I don't know if it will push the bolt out further into the belt. I may try that.

Got it alt goes on the front side of the arm bolt through the back. I did not even catch that on the first set of pic's today. Like this one I happen to have borrowed from another board member can't remember who though. Who ever you are thanks for the pic.

You are correct on how the adjuster mounts behind the alternator. I changed it but it didn't make any difference on where the alternator is riding. Bracket fits better now

The alternator fits in the pivot "saddle" with a clamp on the rear ear of the mount that clamps the alternator. The alternator is as far forward in the mount as it can be.

Ya stumped me on this one then. Anyone else have any idea's On something I must be missing. Most of my experience is on the long water pump with the alt being mounted on the pass. side but, I tried. Bump

Just use some spacers between bracket and head.

that bottom bracket has it worked in the past, have you got a new alternator or new water pump pulley's? the bottom bracket that mounts to the engine should have two holes going thru it. THe Alt sets in there with a bolt going all the way thru to the backside. The upper bracket will go on the back of the of the alt. with the bolt on the back side of what you have. Did you try changing the upper bracket to the other side. My botton bracker does have a spacer to lessen the gap on both ends inside the bottom bracket. This is Same set up as me so it should work...i think

I took this off of my 71 over 15 years ago. Going into a 65 C10 now. Going to a BB in my pickup.

Same brackets, same alternator. The only thing that is different is the engine was rebuilt. It has a different set of factory iron heads, but I recall having it put together in my 71 and not having issues with it before I pulled it apart for this project.

I think I am going to move it out with spacers and go from there.

I know this post is old but how did the alternator alignment problem turn out? I'm having the same exact problem on my 67 GMC. It's mounted on the pass side turning my belt into a black residue.

Question: It seems to need a exciter wire in order to charge, Is the amp gauge suppose to fluctuate between 12 to 14 giving the battery charged as needed (voltage reg) or maintain a steady 14?

Controversial Question: Does it damage your alternator by taking either the positive or negative cables off while the engine is running to check if your alt is good or bad (the old fashion way).

I'm having the same problem as this old post. Post #7 shows pics of the problem. The lower bracket is cast iron and is bolted to the head. Almost like there should be spacers between the bracket and head??? It's about a half-belt off.

Go to the local alternator shop and get a spacer for behind the pulley that will line it up. 1/4 did mine

Your top bracket needs a spacer in between the bottom bracket and the top bracket. Look at my pictures I used a old lug nut to put the top bracket out further.

It sucks not being able to hear! LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB! After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
