a small town called perry......its o.k. there are a hand full of us that have got into this stuff. where we live it is the flatter plains so rocks are not around much, but we prefer the mud over anything. we got an area to play on roughly about 80acres but we stay around the pond. one of the guys i run around with is been tempting to start a mud event on his other place....

a small update.....got the other two springs in and another big thanks to rocky mountain suspension on the speedy delivery. i got another nice offer given to me also i am pretty pumped about. the machine shop across the road gave me the offer to come over and build/cut some of my brackets out, with the exchange of putting there name also on the truck...so i thought that was cool of them. my hyme joints should be in sometime this week (hopefully today). been mostly cutting pieces to box in frame and double checking measurements.

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'

got a little bored and tried my hand (with some help) at a quick sketch up rendering that i am shooting for...VERY ATTENTION GETTING . the color turned out darker than i am wanting to do, and it sits taller than projected. i want to do a little darker gray color than my stock titan color is and keep the top white..i still have a few more companies to add..(don't ask for request cause i know my skills are mind blowing ) let me know what you think.......

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'

the design will be done as one big vinyl wrap. i just threw the rendering together to get an idea going....i will more than likely have "67-72" on the front glass and my big ass "trucks gone wild" on the back glass....i got a few more sponsors and (i can make room if any site vendors are interested) will have a better idea of sponsor locations later on.....

i am setting it up so that i can run like a 60"-64" tall v-tread i will see how that works out when sitting on its own and if my math paid off and it sits the right height.

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'

went to a mud run this last weekend (mudfest in Sparks, Ok.)and was itching to get home to work on the truck....

here is where things are at now..........

i am having the pipe adapters made so i can put the hyme joints in and get the 4 link ready. should be finishing up the last of the cup brackets tonight, just have to finish welding two bottoms and add a center piece of tubing to sit insde the spring for the top perches and blasting/cleaning them all. got my rims in 20x14" and i have to cut out the old centers and put new ones in with the rockwell pattern, and set my offset. i also flipped the hubs on my rocks to suck in the overall length. i should be able to get the springs under it threw out this week/weekend, and hopefully 4 link later into the weekend or next week.......

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'

little bit of an update.......

been working on it have not gave up, sorry for the lack of pics. been doing mostly tinkering on the small stuff (some interior things), and getting the materials around to get things rolling again. got the passenger top bracket setup in. got everything cut and ready to go onto the driver side. put the bottom bracket on just to see if measurement # are good....and they were.....so i will make them permit later. should be able to pick up some more round tubing to start on the rear top brackets. getting down to pretty much puzzle pieceing everything together. hoping to go over to the machine shop across the road and cut the centers out for the rims later into this week . also have to finish flipping the ends of the rocks to narrow them up a little.

Awesome build! In your first post, you mentioned cut 52" Michelins. Do you have a picture of those? Are they worn 52's that are cut down or siped?

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'

they are brand new 52" tires. i am cutting out some of the lugs to make a more aggressive tread. a friend of mine ran the 46" michelins and they would pack full of mud. so i gonna give this idea s shot. what you see in white is my new pattern, the rest is cut out.

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'

here is a quick pic of my front pearches and springs. the piece is cut out on the bottom so that it "saddles" the axle tube. from were it sits on the axle to the top of the spring is roughly 36" tall. i should be able to get the front sitting on its own by this weekend

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'

the bottom bracket is pretty stout. coming off the axle it goes rougly about 8" up to the bottom of the cup. the tubing measures 3x5 so it covers a pretty good area of the bottom plate and axle. tho i am the kind that does over kill i will end up with some gusset pieces that come out along the side of the tubing to stiffen up "side to side".

i have been working on it still, mostly fininshing off the hub flip with all new nuts, bolts and studs. ordered all new studs that are right hand thread (orginal's were left and threads were damaged) so i have been putting them all in and grinding down to fit. i got one side done, and the great Oklahoma weather has been putting me on hold. just good ol' tornado weather, 60mhp wind gusts, hail, about 5" of rain in the last two weeks and to top it off i hair lined fracture to bones in my hand. so now i am down to just one paw.....and it sucks can't even grip a wrench.... but here are some random pics and the finished hub on driver side.

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'

If your truck wasn't getting all the custom work its getting would the rockwell front end just bolt up, as in the pinion is in the right place?

if i were to remove the old front axle (dana 44 passenger side drop) and keep the leaf springs, i would say yes . the theory to my answer: because you could center the axle and make new brackets/U bolts to use (cause the rockwell tube houseing is square) and you could use a wedge block, to make your pinion degree work. I also rotated the whole axle, so that the tie rod is behind the axle, this allows the drive flange to favor the passenger side, so that it can match my 205 transfercase out put. so that means for the rear steer setup i can run the back axle correctly (not rotated) as if it was the front and drive flange is centered (somewhat). now in my pics the front axle is sitting in some stands to give me a rough idea of axle hight and placement, that is NOT the pinion angle. before i make the bottom perches a solid setup i will do my research to see about the pinion angle's cause i am still a little green on that part......i have the idea but just wanna be on the safe side when it comes down to it.

update for the project......nothing.. had the worst weekend ever, threw my back out early saturday morning and have been laid up sinced. if its not one thing its another. best weather weekend in forever and i got nothing

i believe all the 2.5 ton deuces were set with a 32" spring perch center to center"".so one would line right up.
they can be flipped in all sorts of combos without custom work.to swap pinion side, tie rod, hubs etc.

glad to hear you got it mobile. i understand the tear down, that is why i opt to do what i have done (subframe, coil springs). my buddy did his truck with leafs and did not like it, so thats why i went my way. look into getting my coils if they help http://www.rockymountainsusp.com/Sky...il_springs.htm part #F585they are stout (28" long overall they are a 8.5" lift coil for a diesel ford).

you should just send me your tires to borrow for a while....even if they break my 2.5tons i will have fun doing it, and gives me an excuse to tell the wife i need 5tons good luck let me know if i might be able to help.....

Re: project: Sofa King Big 71'

small update......

got more pipe on tuesday to use on the front four link and to finish rear upper sub frame mounts. took some the pipe down to the local muffler shop and got the bends made so i can make the rear setup look similiar to the front. i already have the cups mocked up so all i gotta do is add the big stuff to hold it in place and burn it in, tomorrow i am heading over to the shop to mill out the bung fittings for my hyme joints, and hopefully get rims made (how many times have i said that now ).

on a side note: i will get as much i can get going by this weekend again, but come noon saturday i will be slowing up cause COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS FINALLY HERE so i will firing up the smoker friday night, putting some cold beers on ice and get ready to watch the SOONERS take on BYU and the local COWBOYS take on GEORGIA............GO SOONERS!!!!!

besides it's a three day weekend so i can make up for it on monday

tallhoedude the offer sounds great, i will put it on the back burner maybe for end of next summer.....gotta build my big block then i can try and hit you up, you just can't really find those types of tires around here like you can north eastern...
