I have two different schools of thought here:

1. If it was staged (and I think it was) the profanity Will Smith used afterwards has no place in a decent establishment.

2. If it was legit I think charges need to be filed.

Beyond that I care less for Will Smith and Chris Rock than they do about me.

The point is, (as I heard this morning) Chris didn't know that her baldness was a result of a disease. That certainly removes any kind of "personal attack" from it. No different from any other "roast" type joke at that point.

That was my first thought. Will only did that because of who it was. If that had been "The" Rock instead of Chris Rock, nothing would have happened.

As I see it, this was pure performance....for her. He laughed himself, initially. Then apparently saw her face/reaction and decided to play "Tuff guy".

He did this because of how it would have been perceived later, if he did nothing. The language that he knew full-well was not appropriate for TV was over-the-top.

I heard a reporter on Sky News Australia come off with a great comment this morning. "So you can bang his wife, but you can't comment on her hair or lack there of?"

I'm not so sure about Chris' reaction? Stunned and didn't know what to do? Realized that he wouldn't win if he struck back? Respected the environment?

This is exactly "on point" with the modern message of Words=Violence though.
As I see it, hitting someone over words is silly, but once you have been hit? Game on. Reacting that way to words is just wrong, but there is nothing wrong with swinging right back.

Personally, I would have knocked his teeth right out of his face.

It's poor form no matter if it was real or staged. You don't think the same public would have known of every word spoken on this had Will been a gentleman and addressed this with a statement later. He could have shown class defending his wife's character by putting Chris in his place with some well chosen words.

And if it was staged to promote ratings, or whatever reason, is this how we get families to watch more network TV and movies? By showing physical violence is the way to handle hearing a few words you didn't like hearing? Does little Johnny go home and hit little Suzy for saying he has poopy breath? Do we still use the term role model when it comes to public figures? Way to go Willy boy. Grow up and getcha some class

No kidding. Rickles never pulled any punches. He performed in Vegas with mobsters in the audience. He would rip into them and they loved him. If those guys can take a joke then Will Smith certainly can. He's just another Hollywood actor that's all full of himself.

There are better ways to have handled that for sure. Going up on stage during a live tv show and confronting/striking? the comedian is bad enough but shouting obscenities' across the room on live tv is way out of bounds. Completely normal behavior, in some cultures, apparently. Not something I want my family to witness.
Whoopi is said to be on the board of the Oscars and right away said "we won't take his trophy away". Now several days later I read the board is considering disciplinary measures for Smith, likely only due to pressure from ABC or whichever channel it was on.
I don't watch those types of shows anyway. It does bother me that a lot of younger people do and see it as normal.

^ Yes, the normalization of violence. My wife watches all kinds of TV that would have been rated "X" when I was younger. I think that the violence is the worst part of it. I don't watch much TV, and that is one reason.

Chris Rock handled it well. It was do his job or make a fist fight out of it. IMHOP Smith would have won that.

Smith getting arrested? Pretty laughable. Don't forget they were in California.

If it was fake...it was a pretty stupid stunt in a world demanding diversity and inclusiveness. 'Cause it damned sure went south on both guys and the Academy.

In the short and long of it, I couldn't give 2 chits about any of them. Hell, they're all a bunch of prima-damn-donnas anyway that think the world actually cares about their political leanings / demands.

Haven't watched an awards show in decades. With regard to the Oscars, I rarely even go to the moving picture show. If I do its with my grandkids. If I want to watch a movie I close up the black out curtains in our game room, crank up the sound system and put it on the 75" TV...which is what I bought it for.

Now...am I going grill to hamburgers, or chicken tonight?

Burgers for sure. I was going to grill some burgers but my wife bought chicken. So I guess it's chicken for me tonight.

I watch cooking shows because I like to cook, or car oriented shows on television. Forget the rest of it. It's all nonsense. My wife watches that junk and I put on my headphones so I can't hear it.
