Re: My new project 86 Silverado

OK... finally got my budget worked out for my project.
Paint etc. already decided ,and have supplies.
Front drop, already decided and have hardware.

1st question: looking for another engine solution. at first I was looking at Chevy 327 options, which I really like even though people say i'm crazy for wanting one. If I go with a 327 I want to be able to spin it real high if I want.

For the engine... budget says I can go three different routes... a short, or long block and add ons to complete the engine, or... a turn-key engine.
For a small block Chevy(cubic inches doesn't matter now), I would like input from you guys on which route could be the best bang for the buck with a budget of 4000.00+?
Transmission will be TH400, rear gear 3.08.

2nd question: Since I am only doing static drop on my truck with 2.5" drop spindles etc. up front. And I want to lower it in the rear and have a little rake to it. What would be the best suspension option for getting rid of the leaf spring setup in the rear, and a budget of 2000.00 or less.

Anyone used one of these?
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/na...8/media/images

As always, let me know what info you need to help me figure some stuff out.
Kind regards,
naphtali

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

I've got one of those serpentine kits but its still in the box. It's the same thing they're putting on late-model cars and trucks in a kit to retrofit on a old small block - not much to it really. If you wanted to get all that out the junkyard and dress it up you could and essentially have the same thing. That might be an option if you want to save some $$$ to put on the long-block.

To rev, 327 or 377, but what happened to the 455?

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

I still have the 455 I'm thinking about putting that with my 67.

yeah I figured a kit that had it all together in one package (part #12497697 is with PS/ALT and no A/C) would be cool to put on a SBC instead of one of those super expensive March kits.

thanks man! I just wish It hasn't been raining going on 2 freaking weeks...
I need to re-sand the fenders for the surface rust so I can epoxy prime them, and it's too damp out for either one.

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

Does anyone have any experience with this place?

http://www.skipwhiteperformance.com

As I said in an earlier post, I am leaning toward a high compression 327, aluminum heads, forged pistons, solid roller cam...

BRUISER, what do you think about the serpentine kit? could you post a pic of it? or is it all in a box and a hassle to get out
You willing to part with it? And yeah I still have my 455, I should have it back from the builder in a week or so

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

ordered another gallon of epoxy primer, and a gallon of 2K primer
36 grit and 40 grit D/A sanding disks, lot's of sanding to do to get back to bare metal.

Also went to H/F and got an air drill, and 4 inch grinder for wire brushes and grinding disks for the "patina" on the hood of the cab.

update pics soon...

Mines still in the box. I'm always working on someone else's junk instead of my own. I can't sell it though, despite appearances I intend for it to get installed on the new engine and in the truck this summer. Sometimes you'll find a complete used serpentine set on ebay for around $150 if you don't want to bother junk yard scrounging. A used one could be painted up to look just as good.

Re: My new project 86 Silverado

Going to be getting wheels soon, just want to make sure I get it right... what backspacing should I use for wheels on my truck? stock 10 bolt flipped, no C notch and Mcgaughy's 2.5" drop spindles. i'd like 10" wheels in the back, 8" front. what size tires would be able to fit with plenty of room, I don't want to have to modify fender wells....

any input much appreciated, I hope my drop spindles get here tomorrow!

I think the 10's in rear are fine, in the front the 8's, i hear you might have to trim the LCA's I could be wrong, but that's what i've heard.

I am going out to the body shop and tell him I want it started on. It has been sitting untouched for long enough. The frame is all done and ready. The only issue I am having is whether I want to run a fuel injected engine or carbed. Which means I will have to buy another set of tanks if I go FI. I am ready to start putting it back together.

I'm going the carb'd route, they've been around on chevy engines for what, 80 years or some crap LOL.
For me, I see no need to have FI/EFI for my DD.

Good luck man, get it going
