Vinyl top on a squarebody?

Purchased this 84 C10 recently and it has a vinyl top. I have never seen this on a square. This truck sat in a field for 10 years when I found it and the top has seen better days. Looks like it was put on when the truck was new and looked nice at one time. Somone did a really nice job by tucking the vinyl in behind the drip rails, windshield rubber, back glass rubber and cab trim. On a side note, I already have the truck running, driving and stopping well.

Re: Vinyl top on a squarebody?

I have not seen one before myself.

Makes me wonder what it would look like all new, and polished up.

On a side not if the roof is heavily rusted, and not easily repaired. I have fiberglass large sheets over a Nova I had. I did 3 layers. This saved the roof well enough for another vinyl cover.

They did a few at the seat cover shop I grew up around.
Back around 1970? or so, i remember you could get a sort of roll-on or spray-on simulated vinyl top.
Haven't seen either in many years now!
Except yours'!
Mike.

Re: Vinyl top on a squarebody?

Sorry, I don't have a single picture but.......

In the mid 80's I traded a 77 square to a guy that owned a body/upholstery/car lot business. He painted the truck a light tan and added a brown vinyl top along with a brown tonneau cover. The truck ended up with Cragar wire wheels and I have to admit, the complete package looked pretty darn good.

That actually looks surprisingly good. Without the pictures I would have assumed otherwise.

I wonder if it might be an option for this cab that I have that has a rusted out roof. Just remove the rust and seal it and POR15 it beforehand.

Re: Vinyl top on a squarebody?

Back in the early 80's, my mom's Malibu got hail damage on the roof. Rather than attempt to fix all the dings the body shop installed a vinyl top. Wonder if the same logic was behind this one.
