Bed length from long to short

Hey guys, I'm in the process of building a 1950 gmc with the s10 reg cab, longbox chassis. I have a box but its the longer version. So I need the measurement to turn my long box into a shortbox that will fit my s10 conversion. . I'll be cutting the front part of the box off to shorten it. Top rail measurement would help me alot. Thanks

Are you going to make it stock wheelbase?

The length of a stock short bed side rail is 79-3/4 inches per two that I have here.

Measured down the top of the rail.

BUT you don't just want to cut the bed down to that length as a long bed box is longer on BOTH ends.

The stock shortbed measures 13 inches from the back side of the front post to the front of the fender measured at the bottom of the post.

From the rear of the fender to the post is right at five inches measured like this-

I hope that helps a bit.

If you are running a non stock (AD shortbed stock) S-10 frame cut the front of the box to fit the wheelwells with the wheels/tires and then after the bed is on the truck stand back and look at it to see if you need to shorten the back side some to balance it out.

This is true for a 3800 9 foot box, but not for a 3600 or GMC regular (3100) "longbed". The front of the fenders is the only place that's longer there.

Re: Bed length from long to short

Thanks Mr48 for the pictures and measurements. Now at least i have an idea where to start my measurements. I went and measured my box and the rear of my box is the same measurement as yours at 5 inches. So i should be good to just cut the front off to where i need it.

Re: Bed length from long to short

Chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com has all the specifications for the old trucks including bed dimensions its a nice site. I was going to shorten my long bed but decided to keep it long.

Because I'm curious, how much do you have to trim from them to be short bed length?

Re: Bed length from long to short

After taking alot of measurements. I ended up cutting off 7 inches off the front. BUT my first measurement came out at 9 inches, but it seemed like the cab would be to far away from the box. So i cut 7 and will setup all my mounts brackets etc and see how that goes. I'll let u know if i end up cutting that last 2 inches .

If I remember correctly I cut 7 inches out of the running boards when I shortened my '52. I'll double check and reply if different.

Re: Bed length from long to short

I remembered to measure Saturday and it was 9 inches I cut out on my running boards. My bed is real tight against my cab which I like though.
