Would you buy a haunted house?

My wife and I are looking at buying a beautiful old home. Built in 1889. All restored.Absolutely beautiful. Everything that we have ever wanted and more.

BUT... It is well known by the locals as being haunted. No kidding. It's known as the haunted house. Everybody says it's haunted.

So.Do I want to move into a house with that kind of a reputation or is it just B.S?.

Either way. I don't really care. I bought a house before from some weirdo and some weird things must have happened there. The bedroom doors had padlocks on them when I bought the place. It was creepy. The guy was a creep.

I had weird dreams, crazy dreams when I lived there. My son said the place freaked him out. He's 40 years old now and still brings it up. When we moved it all stopped. Something was up. Don't ask me what. But it was there.

So. Do I do it again? Would you?

Re: Would you buy a haunted house?

Is it known to have something tragic happen there in it in the past? Not that it would really matter.

I do volunteer work at our church a lot and go there after hours. It's a classically-styled mid-century church and it used to kind of creep me out being there alone. Now when I am there, it's no big deal. I got used to it.

I've lived on older houses most of my life. They varied from my childhood home, a mid 1700's Maine farmhouse to our current 1929 city house. Most older homes have unexplained creaks and groans. It's part of the fun.

As long as the neighbors don't do idiotic stuff, you should be good to go. Does it have a big enough garage?

Re: Would you buy a haunted house?

Ghosts, haunted houses, strange things happening? I don't believe in stuff like that, so I would probably buy the place. My wife watches a lot of weird shows on TV and she would likely put the kibosh on it.

I guess that depends on who's telling the story.

The only thing that scares me about the place is the price. It aint cheap.

It is kind of creepy. It would look even more creepy with my hearse parked out front.

Re: Would you buy a haunted house?

My friend’s wife’s grandparents’ house was haunted by a ghost they affectionately called Oscar. All the neighbors knew about Oscar. Friend’s wife told us that, as a child, she would see him when she spent the night there. Then as she got older, she saw him much less, but saw things move and would notice things moved around from the way they were before. She told us once that she saw a fork lift off the table and hover for about five seconds and return quietly to the table about a foot away from where it was before.

Friend and his wife divorced some years back and we haven’t seen her to talk about Oscar in a long time. She never seemed uneasy or scared at all. Guess Oscar wasn’t one of the mean evil ones.

My wife says her dad came to her in a dream about a month after he passed away telling her that he was alright and for her to go on and be a good mother & live a good life. He signed off with “I love you.” She said his eyes were crystal clear & blue and he smiled at her. She believes it was real.

My mom passed away last June 13 from a brain aneurysm. She lingered for about a week after she actually had the aneurysm, though. The doctors let us bring her home instead of placing her in a hospital or nursing home to die. My wife stepped up and was her care giver during that time while she lingered incapacitated. About a month after Mom passed, my wife said that she had a dream about her and my mom told her that she knew what was happening, but couldn’t respond, and she wanted to thank her for taking such good care of her. Mom told her that “she didn’t want to leave us, but she just couldn’t stay” and she started crying and told her that she loved us all. My wife believes that was real too.

Not sure exactly what I truly believe. I guess if I ever have an experience where I see a ghost, or something move, or have a vivid dream like that, it might open my mind a little more.

Re: Would you buy a haunted house?

I believe they (the deceased, especially loved ones) are a lot closer to us than what we realize a lot of the time. My wife and I have had some unexplained things happen to us in 2 different houses we’ve lived. Never freaked me out but I damn sure couldn’t explain it. I’ve never had any real evil encounters though. I do know I’ve had some pretty deep conversations with my Grandaddy in the months since his passing last summer. All thru dreams. Very personal; and very very real. I know it was him without any doubt. He’s talked to me about things I’ve not mentioned to anyone else and said things only he would have said.
I don’t Think I’d be afraid to move into a presumed haunted house. Paul, your hearse woul look awesome out front

Re: Would you buy a haunted house?

If you are hesitant and it seems like a lot of money for what you're getting, then no. If you can let it sit on the market for a while because it is known as being haunted and you can leverage that for a good price then yes. It looks like a really nice house.

Re: Would you buy a haunted house?

Assuming it's an older house, I would be more concerned about things like wiring & plumbing -- even insulation -- than with ghosts. But you say it's been restored, so maybe any potential problem areas have been rectified. What about heating & cooling? I see a brick chimney but you don't want to feed a fireplace except for atmosphere. Some older homes have a lot of rooms, but the rooms are small. Have you toured the inside to see if the room layout suits you? It certainly has character that you won't find in most newer homes. And you're right, parking your hearse out front would be just perfect!

Re: Would you buy a haunted house?

Your account was a little confusing. Did you own this house once before, and are now considering buying it back again?

Re: Would you buy a haunted house?

I guess it all depends. My experience has only been with one ghost in one old house. It was a very old farm house and all of us in the family could say they experienced something to go along with the story. We named him Willard and he never gave anyone any grief while we lived there. Maybe it helps that we had a positive attitude about him. I think he liked us. I have lived in this old house a long time. Never felt there might be a ghost here. I've considered getting one but not sure how to go about it

I could send my ex wife over. She's not dead but she will haunt you. Trust me on that one.

Re: Would you buy a haunted house?

When i was a kid my grandparents lived in a former funeral home. Things happened in that house all the time.

One Christmas the whole family watched my grandpa have a conversation with his best friend who had been dead for 30 years at that time.

I would so buy one of those. That's right up my alley. Imagine the Halloween parties that you could throw.

Old houses like that are cool. If they have scary stories to go along with them, all the better. I would go for it.

Just as long as the shop does not have gremlins that will get into your rides, you should be good!

Every shop that I have ever had has had a gremlin in it that messed up my stuff.

His name is Paul.

Hide the tools. He's going to try and fix something.
