Re: Our "What are we going to do?" 66 Suburban Build

Thanks Randy!

The wheels came back from MRW today...we cleaned them up and shot some silver paint on them (the light makes them look like different shades, but they're the same). You can obviously see the seams, but not too bad. I may do some more smoothing down the road and powder coat them, but I'm anxious to get the tires mounted up right now.

Re: Our "What are we going to do?" 66 Suburban Build

Looks like they did a good job on the wheels. I'm sure you know as well as I do, how difficult it can be to get a perfectly flush fitup on a butt joint, especially with a round tube. Did they weld both inside and out?

If you don't mind me asking, how much did they charge to widen your wheels? I'd like to have a pair of 10" or 12" wide 6 hole ralleys. Just not sure if I want to mess with it myself.

Re: Our "What are we going to do?" 66 Suburban Build

Worked on the rear this weekend. The Trak lok I had picked up ended up being 4.56 and up (not the 4.10 and down we thought). We scrambled around and were able to locate a 35 spline, 4.10 down, Power Lok (MUCH better LS) a couple hours away. We had the shop drop new clutch plates in it and picked it up Sat.

Dropped the R&P/carrier in that night and after a bit of cleaning and painting we slipped it under the burb.

It couldn't fit much tighter, we have about 1/2" clearance between pretty much everything...arm to rotor, tire to spring, tire to fender, arm saddle to caliper mount...I don't know how you could fit much more tire with a stock suspension/frame!!

We bolted everything in to gauge the amount of tubbing we're going to need and to work out the track arm/sway bar details.

Thanks y'all...we struggled with whether or not to go this route, but are glad we did.

We picked up some parts to make a new track arm, so had make some room so we could set the burb down and get the angle of the dangle...no going back now!!

Yep, just enough clearance

Not much to add, but we did get the track arm welded up and in...also made mounts for the sway bar. Everything just fell into place...good clearance everywhere we need it. We bolted axle back in for the last time and hooked everything back up. We have to run the brake line, modify the master, and shorten the drive shaft a bit to finish this part up.

Nope, not yet. We did get the driveshaft shortened today and bolted back in, also had a couple strips of 18ga. sheared for the tubs. Still need to get the brakes hooked up before test driving...but I don't expect any problems.
