Thank you

Thanks, much appreciated. This will be the first decent road trip with both boys..I took Cooper (17) my oldest last yr. This time Austin (15) is going too.

As they have gotten older they really like car shows and cruises. I had the Suburban parked for a couple weeks working on a few things. Austin and I took it for a drive Monday evening and he replied "I miss riding in the Suburban".

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"

Well, the trip did not go as planned on a few fronts. Cooper (my oldest) got Covid the day before we left so he could not go with. The show was great 7,000 cars/trucks.

We received and award. My first ever from a Good Guys event. A big for me.

Now for the bad. I had trans issues on the way to Columbus and I thought it was jsut low fluid. On the way home it got much worse. We went thru 5 quarts of trans fluid to allow us to limp home. It took over 5.5 hrs to get home. At one point, 115 miles from home I thought we were going to have to pull it over and get a tow. We kept pushing and made it. We were burned out (physically and mentally) after that. Home never looked SOOOOO GOOD.

Just trying to keep it real that it is not always rainbows and sunshine in my garage.

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"

You got an award! At Good Guys!

Sorry for the Covid, hope he is feeling better.

Tranny issues can happen to anyone at any time. Yeah, it sucks, but there is a fix. So, I'd say you had a trip to remember.

that's the way it should be! use it enough that stuff happens! and getting recognized is even better.

i keep towing coverage that is 100miles to any destination ... makes that last 99miles of the drive a lot less stressful ;-)

Thanks, I was really flattered. Cooper is young (17) and was vaccinated so he already feels close to 100%. I have not been as tired as I was from my trip home last night. I already have a call into my transmission guy. I have a pool of trans fluid on the garage floor so it wasn't totally empty....ha ha

About 4,250 miles so far and this time last year was the maiden voyage. My Hagerty covers me for 40 miles for towing but maybe I should look to uo to 100 miles.

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"

Congrats on the Award, that is great.

Sorry about the covid, I trust it is not serious and he is feeling better.

Limping an old car home is very stressful, but glad you made it.

I hope the fix does not require too much work, and money.

Congrats again, a Good Guys award is something to be very proud of.

i had these guys to start with as an add on with my insurance and really liked them, then had a hell of a time finding them them again after i switched insurance. i guess they like selling to someone like an insurance company more than individuals, so their website is old and lame. their customer service however is top notch and the coverage is the best for the money. me, the wife, anything we drive, or anything we ride in is covered to wherever we want to go within 100mi.

Did you have the trans rebuilt before you put it in?

Thanks, I have never won an award at GG and I have been going for years. Yes, the trans was rebuilt and upgraded with stronger servos. I also installed a new Circle C torque converter at that same time.

Thank you. I'm about 1/2 way thru removing it. I have a call into my trans guy. I want to make sure I don't disrupt anything that might tell where the leak is coming from. I have a hunch but nothing obvious so far. Glad your trans was self healing. ha ha

Thank you. Cooper was better on Sunday long before the trans will shed it's sickness.

Thank you Jim. So far the clean up under the truck is a tall task. The amount of burnt trans fluid on my SS exhaust is the most upsetting.

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"

Here is the awards presentation for Good Guys Columbus 2022. There are a lot of cool cars and trucks in this video. We accepted our award at the 20:39 minute mark.

https://youtu.be/XLVxmWlp8E0

Trans update: It is out and I'm running it to my trans guy tonight to evaluate. it was NOT a fun job. I should get the trans back next week.

Thanks
Marc

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"

Trans update......

I got the trans back on Friday. No internal damage which was good. Seal replaced. The stock trans pan's drain plug was seized on. I decided to swap the pan for a larger one (with a functioning drain plug) that will also cool better.

I also decided to add a 2nd trans cooler. The trans cooled thru the bottom of the radiator. I deiced to add an additional inline cooler after the fluid leaves the radiator and before it goes back in the trans. Like most things on the Suburban I wanted to hide the cooler so it didn't look like an add on while keeping the additional lines short as possible. I settled on the front of the Suburban behind the front grill in front of the core support down low. I think it will catch a decent amount of air there.

I also was able to use -6an fittings - 5/8" hose barb so I could tie into existing lines. I also had left over braided line so no money spent there. That almost never happens.

All that is left is to install the shifter, hook up the battery and fill the trans.

Thank you
Marc

this is the best way! let the water cooler do the big end of the work and the air cooler just take a little more off the top.

Thanks. On my last truck I just cooled it with a similar cooler along the frame rail. It worked fine but the truck was quite a bit lighter than Suburban.

I forgot to take pics but I had trans fluid burned/baked into the SS exhaust. The clean up effort of the bottom side of the Suburban was the worst part.

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"

Got the trans re-install buttoned up. Filled with fluid, checked for leaks. All that was left was to get it back on the ground and get some fresh petrol in it.

It felt so good to go for a drive lastnight.

I still have bugs and grime from the 600+ mile round trip to Columbus last month. I will be washing the top side soon (the bottom received a full detail to remove all of the trans fluid).

Thank you, we are about to find out. The weekend of the 13th we are driving a couple hrs for an open house and car show at a Speedshop in New Buffalo (Michigan). Its over by the lakeshore. We will find a micro brewery on the way home for a burger and a beer.
