Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

If you have not done so all ready, check the connections at the head lamp bulbs themselves and check the connections at the dimmer switch. That is what I would start with.

I will look at some wire diagrams I have and see what else I can think of that could be wrong.

Over a year ago I had a problem on my truck with the wires going to the dimmer switch
getting hot I think it was a bad factory wire crimp job or something I cant remember right now.
I will have to think about it.

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

I haven't checked the connection to the headlights themselves yet but I did install a new dimmer switch i originally thought that was the problem but that didnt help. Could it be a loose ground somewhere maybe

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

Last night I looked at the wire diagrams and am 99.9% positive that the headlights have nothing to do with the turn signal switch.

It's starting to sound to me like some one has messed with the wiring and spliced something where they shouldn't have

I would start checking all the headlight wiring from under the hood and under the dash.
Look for any extra wires that don't look original or any extra splices.

It would be best to have a wire diagram but it can be done with out one.

If you don't have a wire diagram you might find one online or I can post one here on the forum.

And yes check all your grounds.

I'm leaning towards there being funny wiring because the turn signal switch thing just seems "fishy" to me.

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

Checked the front right turn signal it was dimmer than the left so I twisted it in the housing and it got brighter so that was a ground issue for that one and it works with headlights on. Now I still dont have rear turn signals with lights on I'm assuming it's a ground issue also. Where are the headlight grounds located. Making a little progress I guess lol

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

Cleaned up the screws and housing on my rear lights and now I have front and rear turn signals with my lights on. My front right parking light is not getting a ground any suggestions on how to get it to ground better when I shut my hood sometimes it goes completely out. Could these issues I've found be the problem behind my headlights randomly turning off and on?

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

For your marker light on the hood the first thing I would do is check if the light housing is tight on the hood. Try to loosen and retighten the mounting screws or possibly remove the housing and cleanup the metal where it contacts the hood.
WARNING! The screws may be rusty and break when you try turning them! (This happened to me)
If this does happen you can re drill new holes for screws or just use self taping sheet metal screws. (that is what I did)

A 2nd thing to look at is that you may need to connect a ground strap from the body of the truck to the hood or directly to the light housing if need be.
This more than likely is not the case however if you said the other light works fine but it may be something to try.

You said that you have front and rear turn signals with your lights on.
Unless I have miss understood you, that means that you do not have turn signals with your lights off?

If that is the case than I go back to my earlier statement that I think you have some wiring under the dash that is messed up because the turn signals should work at any time the ignition switch is turned on regardless whether the head lights are on or off.

I hope I have helped you a little bit. Maybe someone else will chime in that has some better input.

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

There is a possibility that it's the headlight switch.
I would replace it and see what happens.(I should have mentioned it before LOL)

Sometimes the internal safety breaker goes bad or does not work right.
sometimes you can fix them but It may be best just to replace the whole switch.

Even if you replace the switch and it does not fix the problem at least you will have one less part of the system to diagnose. LOL

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

Looks to be some kind of relay or something.
I have never seen one of these on these trucks before for the head lights.
It could be something aftermarket.

Anybody else seen this?

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

So after thinking about it for a while I'm pretty sure its a relay of some kind.
I've just never seen one in these trucks before.

It could be your problem but I don't Know for sure.

Have you checked the connections on it?

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

Yeah I checked it out i think it is the horn relay i unplugged it and it had no effect on the lights at all. I did unplug my headlights and took the metal clip out of the plug and it and the wires connected to it were corroded i cleaned the clip up but the wires were still corroded could the corrosion on the connection from wire to the metal clip be the problem

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

If its corroded really bad it could be the problem.

Re: Turn Signal Switch Question

Anyone know what the screw size is that attaches the turn signal arm to the actual switch? I either lost it, or neither my new arm nor switch came with one...
