Curious if anyone has removed the stainless trim button from a deluxe knob? I'm pondering the possibility of adding the stainless trim to a base knob for use on my manual throttle.

Probably not what your thinking Pete. Lower right, choke cable, glued extra 72 knob on a generic choke cable added aluminum bezel from 64 Impala ? Maybe.

Thanks for the input guys. I’m curious how the trim is affixed - pressed on or glued? If glue I’ll try to remove after applying a heat gun.

I don’t know if this is throttle or choke. Is this deluxe? The base seems off to me. I know I had been collecting for hand throttle and choke at one time.

The Choke Control is simpler. It just slides in and out. The Throttle Control has a threaded component so you can screw in/out to fine-adjust your throttle rate.

It's Deluxe. The Standard knobs are all black plastic.

As to the original question: I would just buy Deluxe knobs new from a vendor, rather than mess up Standard knobs. Maybe not as much fun, but lots quicker.

That makes sense. I actually had a complete hand throttle set up for 72 that I recently sold. Never even took it out of the box to check how it worked from when I purchased it, just wanted it because it was on the SPID … Oops haha.

I haven't tried, but I am sure if you soaked in something like lacquer thinner it should dissolve the adhesive and not harm the metal. I think any prying would be out of consideration

Might not harm the metal, true. But what's a strong solvent going to do to the plastic knob?

You can't buy a new throttle knob. That's the thing. You got it, the knob is being trashed for the trim anyway. Plus... I'd almost bet that plastic could take it. Seems so hard and tough. Only one way to find out, right?

Those have three clips that extend down that plastic is molded around, not glued on. I have an extra one if you want it.

I would often think if the inserts themself can be made and used on the base knobs, seems like that from the factory.

That wouldn’t be a bad idea. Inserts that can be glued to base knobs. I’ll post up a pic of an insert when in hand.

Pete, Maybe you can see the little metal 'ear' that's exposed on this broken knob.
It holds the shiny center onto the knob along with a couple more, like atog said.
You can have this one as a freebie if you have any luck fixing the other one.

Larry thanks a bunch for the offer. Member Atog was generous and offered an insert to me. I’ll let you know if I end up needing another but think I’m set for the time being. Should be fun project to add this.
