newby cam question.

Alright folks I have a 64 c10 with a 350/350 stock rear and 275/45/20 rubbers. So I am having to rebuild the motor I bought that was supposed to be turn key ready, due to a lot or rust in one of thy cylinders. Imagine 30 grit sandpaper on the upper side of the wall. So I am boring the cylinders from .040 to .060. I've already purchased a new eddy performer 600 cfm carb, eddy performer rpm intake, hei distributor, long tube headers, and a stock converter. Since I have it apparent i want to put a mild cam in her belly to wake her up a bit. I know I will have to replace the lifters but I have seen something saying I need to replace the valve springs and some say I need to replace the rockers. Is this a must or just another way to build power. I'm already over budget with this build so if I can do lifters and cam that would be the goal and do the rockers later. a .060 overbore is a crapshoot at best...I hope you had the block sonic'd...but I wouldn't do it no how no way.

what head are you running? gears? trans?

350 trans, factory 3:07 rear I believe stock heavy half rear. Heads casting numbers are, 3886336 I've tried to look them up but can't find any info on them. And to my knowledge it has not been sonic checked.

I hate giving bad news...but if you haven't already done the .060 over...just don't.

I would tend towards a bit milder cam, either the Comp Cams 12-231-2 or 12-235-2. better low-end torque, and with those gears, that's what you'll need.

I haven't boared it yet but need to. In order to remove the rust it will need to be boared. It has .040 pistons in it already. I'm trying to I'D the cam that's in it right now. Cam has 115848 stamped into the gear end of the cam. From what I can tell it's fairly similar to the cam that's in it. http:// http://www.jasperengines.com/pdf/383_TBI_Comparison.pdf not saying this is my cam but the numbers seem to match without measuring the lobes.

.060 is not that bad ive seen many go .060 now .080 is a different story

Just make sure your radiator is good. I bored a 350 60 a couple of times, and they ran fine. Just they can have a bit of tendency to get warm easier. My builds were warmed up so running was going to happen.

with the cost of machining and the problems I've seen personally with .060 over ...especially with no sonic...I would go more towards a known good block that will clean up at .040 over and just reuse everything you have.

blocks are cheap. machine work is expensive.

^^ What DBD said. You have to strip a block to do the machining anyways so buy another block that is good. A used 1st Gen SBC block is dirt cheap. You are paying for machine work either way. Re-use all your other parts. I'm assuming your .040 pistons are still good. Maybe a new ring pack. I think your ahead a little money if you buy a used block but can reuse all your other parts (not buying .060 over pistons) and have a more sound engine at .040 instead of pushing to .060 over.

Just my $0.02, in the end you need to be happy with what you have.
