You've probably opened yourself up to alot of pestering , I still haven't checked the runout on the harmonic balancer after it took the hit when the lifting chain broke, what would you expect the max runout would be? As well should I be concerned about the crank, or just assume the worst, drop $400 and replace the crank, obviously breaking the crank would be catastropic.

What exactly happened? The chain broke and it landed on the Balancer?

Re: Project Git-R-Done - 72 K25

The front chain on my leveler broke, it didn't land fully on the harmonic balancer, but the harmonic balancer did hit the crossmember, as well as the oil pan, accessory bracket, and fuel pump. I figured I'd check the runout to see if something bent or cracked, but realistically I don't know what to expect to see or even if that will tell me anything useful about crank damage.

Re: Project Git-R-Done - 72 K25

Definitely replace the harmonic balancer. Get a Fluidampr. Best of the best. Also, its up to you to replace the crankshaft. If you decide to let me know Ive got more info for you.

Re: Project Git-R-Done - 72 K25

I think the price of a new crank is cheaper than a new block, so I'll replace the crank as well. Any advice you have would be helpful, a good brand of crank to buy, I'll get new rod and crank bearings as well. A company you'd recommend dealing with too.

Thanks,
Ron

Re: Project Git-R-Done - 72 K25

I haven't updated this thread for a while, I've been concentrating on the youtube updates of the buildup. Right now I'm trying to get the truck ready for paint before things get too cold to continue. Here's a couple of pics of the latest stage, I'm nearly finished bodywork on the cab and hood, today I hit them with another coat of high build primer. Tomorrow I'll work on the fenders, door and cowl. Hopefully this weekend I'll get some paint on it.

Re: Project Git-R-Done - 72 K25

Great Build!
I am surprised on the lack of comments considering the amount of time you have put into posting pics, vids, and great details.

I will have to check in a little more often! I am wanting to try a little bodywork myself and you are doing an excellent job.

Keep it up.

Your project is moving along, i need to kick mine into high gear and get some done. What did you have to do for body work? Any rust repair?

Re: Project Git-R-Done - 72 K25

Thanks, the cab was one I picked up that came here from California, even so it needed kicks, outer floor, inner and outer rockes as well as both cab corners. Not the best welding job as I did the cab a few years ago for another project, but decided to use it for this one.

Tomorrow I'm going to try to get some more high build on it and maybe get some paint on the inner surfaces, but I've got to fix my shop chimney since it fell apart when I touched it today.

Re: Project Git-R-Done - 72 K25

I spent the weekend high build priming the cab and hood, sanding it with 400 grit and then epoxying them. Apart from sanding a few runs I think I'm done with them until it's time for paint.

Today I put the doors back on so it'll be easier to do some body work on them.

I agree - great job... I wish I had some great, enlightening comment to kick in about diesels or the body work you're doing, but to be honest both are over my head... Don't tell anyone but I'm afraid of trying new things! - It looks like you're doing great work though! Sorry to hear about your engine's fall... Couldn't you have the crank crack tested , before you decide to replace it???

Re: Project Git-R-Done - 72 K25

Actually I've decided not to replace the crank, I'm just going to replace the harmonic balancer. My dad pointed out that it fell into a sprung frame, didn't land directly onto the HB, the fuel pump took some of the drop as well as the accessory bracket so the damage is "probably" minimal. I'll take a chance with the crank, but replace the HB and fuel pump.

Re: Project Git-R-Done - 72 K25

Well I am still working on this, in the latest video I started spraying some base and clear on the underside of the hood. I'm off next week so the paint WILL be done by end of next week, hopefully this weekend.

Got some Base and clear on the cab interior and inside doors. Used Nason's Ful-Base and Select Clear.

Re: Project Git-R-Done - 72 K25

Nice job, Ron. I just realized I knew your videos from youtube. Great work. I'd been checking out your front axle rebuild. As far as the crank goes, I wouldn't even worry about it. Just replace the balancer. In order for the crank to be damaged, the snout would have to take a major/serious direct blow. It was somewhat "protected" by the balancer when it dropped. It may have been time to replace the balancer anyhow.

Good to hear, I'll call replacing the HB an insurance policy, shame though, it was brand new.
