Muffler help

I just bought a 91 k5 and while it sounds good its just too loud. I really want to run flowmasters but I'm afraid they will be too loud too. Is there a quieter series of flowmaster that I should be aware of? Thanks in advance

on my 1977 c-10 i ran true duel 2 1/4 pipes off the manifold through an h pipe into duel flowmaster 40's out the side(infront of the wheel) and my truck sounds perfect it sounds bad to the bone outside the truck and nice and quiet going down the road i wish i had done that years ago...

i put a flowmaster 70 series on my '90 stepper d.driver. slight rumble at idle, just a little more when on the throttle. probably the quietest f.master you can buy

If you want ultra quiet you can always get a large case Dynomax Super Turbo. If you are set on Flowmaster, then the 70 series is the way to go.

in all fairness, flowmasters are far from being masters of flow. most any cheapy turbo with our perform them.

You mean based off of the BS "flow" tests? Since when can you properly test muffler "flow" on a bench? Hot gases flow completely different in an exhaust system than any flow bench test.

The "flow" in a muffler is not always as important as the velocity. More volume moving slower isn't always better then less volume moving faster. Just as an X pipe works, chambered mufflers work off impulse from the exhaust valve closing to help pull exhaust out. Like anything else, you have to match the correct size muffler/exhaust system to your engine.

And FYI, most of my cars have Dynomax Super Turbo's on them...because I like the "stockish" sound.

^Not to mention we've been over this in dozens of threads. Unless you are spending thousands on a drag truck there is no need to worry about the performance of one muffler over another. There's a 5hp gain maximum. Go with what you like the sound of. I have no problems with the volume on my super 44's but they exit out the back of an 8 ft bed. I'd go with 40 series and exit out the back in your application. The side may not be too bad, but the rear will definitely be quieter.

I think they flow fine. I like the way they sound more than that. It's just really loud in my k5 and I want to keep the sound I just want less of it

They look like 2 chamber flowmasters. I think what's throwing me off are the echoe tips. I was planning on cutting them off today but I couldn't find a metal blade.

Gotcha, yeah tips can change the sound a bit. I really do think some sound deadener might help you out too though. That way you can keep the tone you like, but kill some of the sound coming into the cab through the floor. It's pretty easy to lay down and doesn't cost a lot as long as you don't get dynamat.

Flow masters have tone? Lol. Maybe back when they made them right. Nobody at the car shows around here can stand them anymore cause they sound a lot diff than they used to. The drone will never go away changing the tips may make a small diff but not much. I would recommend magmaflow pypes or spintech. Both know what they are doing when it comes to exhaust.

exhaust is my favorite part of any build, i've used about everything out there. on my ls powered camaro i run a hooker aerochamber and really like it. no drone at cruise and it sounds great when you mat the pedal. if i ever change i'm going to do a single exit pipe with a banks monster muffler.

running the pipes out the back helps in any application. i had an el camino with spintech sportsmans that was obnoxious going down the road....the pipes shout out in front of the rear tires, after i ran the pipe over the axle and out the back, it was easier to live with as a daily.

Couldn't tell you for sure. I got some reflectix from lowes, but that's more for heat insulation. They probably sell sound deadener, but it wouldn't be as good for the application as some of the stuff you can get online. I went with FatMat, but there are plenty you can get for cheap that work fine. I got 25sq ft on amazon for $55, but I'd go with 50sq ft.

Go to big box hardware/carpet store (i used home depot)

Go to carpeting-ish isle (somewhere in that area)

Find carpet insulation or I think they call it carpet pads (its in big rolls, like the carpet they stock there, its the stuff you put under home installed carpet)

Go with the thickest packed kind (just push on each and see which is most dense, at my home depot, the blue colored kind was the most dense)

Get a few feet by a few feet cut for you

20 bucks later you have cuttable, formable, cheap but very effective insulation

and thats coming from a guy who deals with the rattles of a diesel


ALSO

Home depot carries stuff called QUICK ROOF, its roofing heat insulation, it has its own peelable sticky side (peel away coating, it sticks to anything). This stuff is the poor man's Dynamat.

Stick quick roof to floor pad, you have the ultimate insulation, for less than $40 for your whole cab

P.s., if you are thinking twice about using home carpet padding in a truck, I just pulled the factory carpet out of my truck, guess what I found, the same stuff installed from factory. Ever look under the dash against firewall? Carpet padding, or as the car world calls it, jute. Pretty much ground up foam attached to a sheet with glues

Reflectix doesn't have adhesive on the back, I just stuck it on the door with some gorilla tape. Not professional, but it works and no one knows its there.

I got peel n seel from the section where they have metal gutters in Lowe's...although not all lowes carry it. I Stuck it on the floor and back wall of the cab. No problem sticking even in the California heat. The key is a nice clean surface. My truck has a 250 with 2 1/2 single exhaust to a two chamber flowmaster. It's fun for the first 5-10 minutes...but then the sound gets old. I'm 41, so that might have something to do with my dislike for the drone. i think i will stick an expansion chamber or a small muffler somewhere upstream of my flowmaster.

the flowtech raptor mufflers are what i use in my true dual system. 25 a pop and have a nice deep sound with a little rasp. perfect. they sound good with the windows down but are very quiet inside. i really am amazed at how quiet the interior is but how they are fairly loud on the outside. they turned out to actually have the terminator series internals but were still cased and labeled as the raptor series. so 80 buck mufflers for 25$ ? yes please. not sure if they all are like that but i would expect so.
