Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

Drew the truck is looking awesome! I had to go back several pages to pick up where I left off. Very nice work as always! I am really thinking about getting a burb lined up so I can build myself a hauler this winter. I want as much cab room as I can get. With that being said, seeing how you have done yours already. Do you think you could cut the burb body at the front of the rear wheel well and then add the truck cab rear portion on there?I'd like to have a lot of cab room if I can.

Yes you could have a longer cab by doing just that very thing. I personally didn't want any more total length, so I kept it at what the factory would have done.

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

the ones that were done for special orders like the one they modified to build the truck in your profile pic Drew were tad bit longer. the rear doors were the front doors and were something like 4" or 6" longer. that's just a guess on the measurements but you all get the idea.

Yep, I was meaning though if Chevy had designed it and built it on the line they probably would have wrapped the cab corner onto the existing door jamb like I did. Less engineering money to use what they had already designed.

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

Ok, something worth posting finally. - Although I'm not quite sure-

Started in on my possible headliner that requires some creative fabrication. I used 3 layers of thin plastic to keep my roof and cab clean. Then I spread out the black fleece - I realize now I should have tried to stretch it tighter. I spread out the fiberglass resin on the fleece , but some areas cured quicker than others and it puckered up in one or two spots. Then I laid on my fiberglass resin again and spread out woven roving type fiberglass mat with more resin on top of that. It seems pretty stiff, I'll have to trim it around the edges and fit it in there. Then cover it with headliner material.
Now that I have done this, I have a different idea so I may not end up with this at all. If I love it great, if not, plan B.

Nice work! I know that fiberglass work in big chunks like that can be a real joy!

Too bad you couldn't put the cab on one of those rotating devices, tipping it upside down, working it from the inside.

that was my thought too. that way it would fit the inside of the cab perfectly instead of the outside.

The way Drew is doing it is exactly how a lot of street rod guys do it. Once they get the shape they cut it, fit it, and then put it back together. Just think how nice it would be bending over, leaning in to do the fiberglass work because it isn't like you can sit on the inner roof panel to do it while it's upside down.

Drew, that stinks about the paint issue. Was it a reaction or something?
Runs and trash in the paint. I could wet sand and buff, but each bad area is near a body line and I would probably burn through and have to repaint anyway.

I'm sure as soon as I post this someone will let me know why. Maybe I've been drinking too much, but why did you mask off the centers of the doors, but not the fenders?

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

he was having problems aligning the molding on the fenders as there isn't a constant body line to make sure they were square to the world. I believe he knows where that line will be on the doors, and will hang the fenders to locate the white area on there later.

Re: ** YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ** The truck Chevrolet should have built.

I went round and round on where the upper molding should go on the fenders. I know where in theory, but what if the front end of the molding needs to be adjusted a quarter or half inch up or down so that it runs straight with the rest of it on the doors and bed? You can't do it because the upper molding stops about 1 inch short and leaves your paint break line showing. On top of that the molding comes to a point and so it is critical that your paint line is exactly in the middle. I just had a bad feeling that on the final assembly my front upper molding might end up running uphill or down. I am going to mount and adjust all the sheet metal and then pull a string to mark where to mount the molding on the fender, drill the holes, tape/plastic the whole truck and shoot the white on just the fenders at the end. I might be over thinking it, but better safe than sorry.
