Washer pump on washer tank installation

I had asked what people are using for washer bottle/jar/tank mounted pump and did not get a lot of replies or answers. I tried one of the non tank mounted pumps and it was noisy and leaked.

I had purchased a push into a rubber grommet type and was not impressed. Installing it into a reproduction tank (thinner than OEM) looked hack with the amount of silicone caulking/sealant I ended up using. I bought an OEM used tank and a couple of NOS (in case I wanted to return to original)

I also purchased an AC Delco pump that screwed into a tank mounted grommet but did not come with a nut or filter. Member Greasy Harley informed me the Anco 63-01 pump comes with the filter nut.

Here is what I ended up with and I believe it will work (not tested, too cold and I painted the bracket).

And here is looking inside you can see the filter nut.

You can make them work off the factory switch; you just have to run a jumper from the back of the switch. I have an S10 tank in mine and that's how I did it.

I installed a Newport engineering motor and switch so on this Blazer I just grounded the pump at the bracket and ran the power wire off the switch (actually using Dakota digital gauges so I repurposed the temp gauge wire) to the pump. The electrical has been tested and works perfectly.

On a factory motor the two wires that would normally go to the factory pump would need to be brought out of the passenger compartment to the tank mounted pump. Those are female connections inside the connector. You could just crimp on some male connectors and push them into the factory connector and not cut or alter your factory wiring. The factory wiring uses a constant hot and switches the ground. The pump does not care which gets switched so it would work. My only concern would be a constant hot wire going to the pump. It is fused through the wiper circuit so if there was a short or overload it would be protected.

Here is a visual on the external pump hookup. Unhook this Brown connector from the washer/wiper and connect the Positive wire from the new pump to the Yellow side and Black wire to the Dark Blue side. I would wrap some electrical tape around the connector after the hookup.....

I like this idea. I have some reservoir with pump and it works well but it really doesn't set on the supplied bracket very well. I actually have the reservoir tie wrapped to the bracket - which it still slides off a bit and is always cockeyed - which annoys me to no end.

Looks like a nice mod, which I still have the original reservoir / bracket in my attic. I'll have to give this some thought - thank you for posting this.

Anco 63-01 Windshield Washer Pump
Amazon $25 bucks but 43 with shipping (not Prime).

VINTAGE Anco DODGE PLYMOUTH Windshield Washer Pump with WHITE PUMP HEAD!
Ebay $25 shipping included. I think this one looks closer to Thealien example?

Re: Washer pump on washer tank installation

If you look around the ones on eBay are cheaper than Amazon or anywhere else I’ve been able to find.

I think I found both of mine for under $20 shipped. I wanted a spare in case it broke I could just replace it quickly. And who knows how much longer some of these parts will be available.

Re: Washer pump on washer tank installation

I found one from the same seller where the body was black, 16 bucks shipped. Figured why not, give it a try.

What did you use to drill your hole (size) for a good grommet fit?

My first attempt with the reproduction tank was a failure and required a bunch of silicone sealant and I’m sure it will hold the fluid but I didn’t like the look of it and proceeded to go with this route.

I have a drill hole guide that I use for measuring the diameter of things. I placed a grommet in a couple of the holes until I found one that fit pretty snug. If I remember correctly it was about 7/8 of an inch but please verify for yourself.

After locating the center of the hole I drilled a pilot hole with a sharp 5/16 bit. I then used a sharp Unibit to get it close. Even taking my time it tended to walk from where I wanted it to be and would have to push it more towards the direction I wanted. Slowly. I then use an X-Acto knife to trim the last little bit to size. I then put a little bit of silicone sealant in the groove of the grommet before I installed it. I put a little dielectric grease on the threads of the pump and started to screw it into the tank. I held the nut with a long pair of needle nose and continued threading the pump in until it was fairly snug. I then spun the whole assembly grommet and all until it was positioned how I wanted it. Then let it sit for a couple days so that little bit of silicone on the groove of that grommet would set.

It’s been a few days but I have not put any washer fluid in the tank yet as I’m not ready to put it in the truck. I’m about 99% sure it will be nice and dry.

I wished I had one of those things... Thank you for your additional details, nice to have that to plan my route on this modification!

To add to this I just wanted to show an easy way to make connections to the factory wiring without cutting anything. The connectors I’m picturing are the ones that are used in the block that protrudes through the firewall that the engine and lighting harnesses plug into. You could also use just a standard male stake on connector but I couldn’t find any at the moment. The connectors I am showing in the picture are a Packard style connector.

To minimize any chance of shorting anything out I would put a piece of heat shrink right up to the end of the connector that would be sticking out. Or as LockDoc suggested at least tape it up.

Great idea! This will also work for the 60-66 trucks that came with that washer fluid jug.
