Sm465 swap using parts out of a i6 truck?

I decided to go a different route with my 1969 gmc 1500 and I will be swapping my 2004r for a sm 465 as the first part of a 4wd conversion that I will be doing in small steps. My truck has a v8 in the 4wd position because it was originally a i6 truck. I have a 1972 c20 with a 292/465 that I am pulling all the parts off of. Besides the pivot ball I will need to get for my v8 what other parts can I not use off of the 292 truck? My truck also was born with a manual three speed so it already has the bracket on the frame for the z bar and clutch pedal assembly. I think the drive shaft from the c20 should I line up in my truck. Thanks guys

Re: Sm465 swap using parts out of a i6 truck?

Unless its a c30 frame i would start looking for a k truck frame

I went through this myself 3 dacades ago building my truck from a c10 to a k10

I chased down a few 4x4 partial truck frames then found a complete truck with a blown motor and a rougher cab
I went and frame swaped it installed my motor and drove it right away

C10 c20 trucks widen the frame at the back axle to accommodate coil springs
C30 and k10 k20s are more straight frame rails over the rear axle

Sm465 have a different output shafts for rwd and 4x4 trucks as well

Your 200r4 will run better if you get proper gears closer to 3.73

Re: Sm465 swap using parts out of a i6 truck?

Better to start with a complete chassis then piece everything together
Buy everything seperated will cost much more

I picked up a 4x4 in carlsbad nm drove it home to the yukon used lots of oil but got it home have to look around craigslist and ebay and Facebook market place at nearby states and cities

The other big thing is post up want adds as well looking for 67 to 72 4x4 trucks

I’ll do some searching on marketplace. I see a few pop up every now and then. But they are usually overpriced. I still want to do the manual swap even if I end up doing a frame swap like you mentioned.

I would highly recommend running a hydraulic clutch and ditching the factory mechanical linkage setup. If you’re interested I can answer any questions you’ve got. I love the hydraulic clutch in my K20.

Carlsbad to Yukon? I bet that was quite an adventure in a truck you just bought and didn’t know the history on haha.

Re: Sm465 swap using parts out of a i6 truck?

I fixed more things in his driveway that havent worked since the 70s lol

I learned from my 69 that came from arizona ask questions dam squiters didnt work sucked driving into seattle had to pull over clean the mud a few times off the winsheild

I like a mechanical clutch setup almost never fails but you can gain header space with the right hydraulic setup i am on the search for a nv4500 for my k30 build depends if i can find an early one use Docs thread how to convert to old skool of it its 96 up switch to hydro clutch

Shoot me a pm of a rundown on the hydraulic clutch if you could. This is a budget swap so I may run the mechanical clutch for now. And then upgrade later. Will I need to pull and install the manual crossmember in my truck from the 292 truck as well?

4x4s and newer trucks do not use the bellhousing tranny mount they use a standard tranny mount like an auto

Well for the time being while the truck is still 2wd will I need the mount? I have a v8 three speed column shift bell housing crossmember that I can use as well. I’m not sure if these is a difference in the crossmembers or just the mounting location.
