Straying from the flock?

Hi All- I'm usually over on the Pickup side of this forum, but thought I'd cruise to the Blazer/'Burb "hood" to pose a question of significant import. I want to get a campin' rig. Something I can pull a toyhauler trailer with and still have room for the kids, gear, and 3-dogs.

I got my eye on this:

Does anybody know how these compare service-wise to a 67-72 'Burb? Don't get me wrong I was raised "bowtie or die", but there's something about this IH that is too effin' cool to ignore.

Opinions please.

Ok, but you said "Opinions please". I agree its hard to ignore because ugliness of that high of a concentration tends to scar the retina!!!

Granted it doesn't have the sexy-swingin' lines of the 'Burb, but at least it ain't a F*#D! Probably because neither Ford nor Dodge had the forward vision to market a family oriented "land-barge" until it became the ride de jour for soccer moms the world over.

I agree with you there. Actually they look OK when wheel they're not that yellow with those wheels. The early one are really cool!

i had a 70 4x4 and it was ok i say ok
because thats what it was it ran ok
looked ok and never really broke until i dropped the breather wing nut down the carb and stuck a valve oops but that was my bad
they were some rusting mothers here in indiana if you found one that wasnt rotten it was a transplant from the south and its days were numbered
so i guess mine was just ok
parts were wierd to get though but i dont even remember what motor it had in it

Buy a 99 and up Tahoe/Burb IMO.

Something with FI, over drive, good suspension and comfy seats.

I just think it would be too hard to get parts for and they're really ugly too. Sorry just my two cents. Now maybe if it had a swapped in GM drivetrain, that might be neat but other than that I wouldn't bother.

Parts are and always were a pain with these.They used different jobbers in different areas.The trucks came with a list of who made what.Without that it was tough.Especially if the vehicle got moved from one region to another.
I always liked their stout plain looks,kinda like a truck . I mostly like the 4wds.But those wheels on there????Nah!

My Uncle loved his tavelall. He said it was the lightest of all the "SUVs" of those days. He loved the transmission and the options you could get on the axles and suspension. They are kinda ugly. They have great window arrangement. I dont know, but I think their being kinda hard to find and repair makes them both interesting and maybe a handful. If you decide to do it, more props to u. I mean bowtie or die, lol.

I think they're cool. Especially the older ones. I'd take that one and throw on some original looking wheels and white walls.

imo if its main purpose is for the family... I'd go late model like mentioned above. I don't see young to teens being comfortable in that, on several levels, lol... If you were able to put in late model seats, air, tv, dvd, sirus, seat belts, limo tint, etc., then maybe. I like it, different. But for family hauling, comfort is key, gotta keep everyone happy.

Holy Crap Big J- Your kids require all that gagetry to be happy? When I was a kid we sweated our a$$es off in the back of a '73 Chevy work van w/o A/C or DVD, or Sirius, or Ipod, or PS3, much less carpet, a window that opened or anything that resembled a seatbelt- but those trips to the lake, mountains, desert, and beach were the best times of my life.
I figure for $1500 it might be a good rig....we all know I couldn't touch a decent & driving 67-72 'burb for that kind of scratch.

I think it's kinda cool, but the wheels don't do it for me!
They were a pretty tough truck, but hard to find parts for.
I just sold my '68 'burb (and already regretting it), but still have the '72. It was a good driving and pretty much all original beast, that I picked up for a good price; so I'd have to disagree with Dingfodgy, about not being able to find one for a decent price. They may not come around every day, but they are out there.

I'd say keep your eyes open for a 'burb, but if that thing "floats yer boat", go for it.

I've got a suburban, but the travellall is cool, simply because it is so un-cool. The parts are a drag, but it's a unique ride. And, as Bush might say, it's versatilier than a lot of other old cars.
But man, dump the pimpy wheels. Whereever, or whoever you are, or ever will be, please dump your pimpy wheels. Nothing says modern day loser like retarded rims like that. If you have 17 or 18" wheels on an old truck, car, or anything, you are so uncool it aint funny. I'm embarrased to even look at those wheels.

for 1500 i would grab it in a heart beat.. they are cool.. ugly makes them look good.. and nobody will ever confuse it with a chevy or ford..lol. when the drive train wears out, give it a heart beat.. a late model efi/aod would be cool.. but those wheels got to go, you could probably get back about half what you paid for it if you sell those ugly wheels..

I think they are cool.I don't think the wheels are.I saw one in th mid 70's that was done in that style(mid 70's 15 in wheels custom paint, tinted windows) and it was pretty cool.Not many did "SUV" in those days so it had unique going for it.Still does.You will probably win trophy's in the "Travelall" class at a show unless it's an IH show.
For that price I would say go for it.Just plan to upgrade to Bowtie running gear as you need.You could probably adapt late model 'Burb interior to get the comfort.
Just think, you would be the only dad on the block with one.

You could be waiting a long while for that to happen...I know of an IH pick-up, that has over 500000 miles on it and still going very strong...it's an old work truck and gets beat like a rented mule and that 345 just keeps coming back for more

I think it is pretty neat. I agree the wheels look a little out of place, but I'll say they look better than stock wheels would.... stock would give a "smelly old man" vibe in my opinion.
Looking in your signiture, I see 2 late(ish) model cars (I must be getting old, i think of a 21 year old jeep as late model) I dunno if I would put an old IH inter service as a daily driver without a backup... just as some others have indicated, but, your actual original post doesn't quite sound like that's what your intentions are.
I say go for it. A little more drop, and paint it black... it'd be pimpin!

My family had 4 of them over 15 year or so period for ranch use. They were tough...REAL tough! But as they started breaking down we eventually had to retire two of them for parts for the other two. Many of the parts were just not available. Granted that was in the 80s-90s and the internet wasn't an option for tracking stuff down. As a side note, we had virtually no trouble with the engines themselves. They were running like tops until we started stripping them down. It was the rest of the drivetrain that would give us problems.
